great riding. Tomorrow is another story not tons of rain but warm and some rain. Lots of sleds a more on a saturday. Here shows more snow next week but not much.

Thanks for the trails report, hopefully they’ll be some snow left when we get there Sunday afternoon.

I had a message from Mark a day or two ago saying trails were flat and fast, but the area may not survive a warm up.

Hopefully he may give an update tonight. I am guessing he would be back to the Universel tonight after his overnighter to Amquii.

Thanks, I’ll be watching the post. We plan on arriving at the universal Sunday.

I can't remember the trail numbers,  but basically #85 south past RDL clubhouse, continue 85 south onto RR bed,  left onto orange trail 40?, then onto green trails to St Cyprien and then Squatec.   Gas up in Squatec, jump on 35 east for about 15 or so miles and watch for well posted sign (right turn) to MV.   When you get to NB border you can bear right or left to get to MV,

    About 240 miles round trip.

Believe MV only takes cash,  no cards. Lunch time is usually packed, best to get an early start.  Gas usually available  but expensive. Some high speed running so plan to get not so great mpg.   Fantastic run, beautiful.

Thanks for the info Mike, heading up to RDL on Sunday.

  5. Our snowmobile club in Hermon, Maine is having a raffle for a 2022 ski doo 600 renegade sport, tickets are $50.00 with only 400 tickets being sold. If you go to www.sledhermon.org there’s a link that you click on to put your information and payment in. Please read through the part that explains on how to do it because it could be confusing.  Thanks. Also if I’m breaking QR rules on what to post please let me know and I’ll remove it.
                                Thanks, Terry.

Today's ride in Maine was northeast to Oxbow, following York's recommendation to see the bisans  and  eat the bisons at Homestead Tavern and Farm. Trails were Quebec worthy again today, as were the cold and blustery temps. Oxbow looks like an awesome area to ride judging by the amount of intersections and trails in that area.

Glad you enjoyed it Mike, it’s been awhile since I’ve been north of the oxbow so not sure what the trails are like but I’m thinking there on wood’s road also. Did you take 71d out of the oxbow? Which direction are you riding tomorrow?

Thanks York, really enjoyed the ride today and thank you for the advice. As I neared Umcolcus, I saw signs for another place up the trail, must have been the Homestead.  I am hooked on the north bound trails. Any idea how much further Homestead is past Umcolcus, and also how much further trail 71D turn off is past Umcolcus.  Still mulling over tomorrow's ride.

I am wondering if Umcolcus has a new owner.   Guy about 40, thinking his name is Andy, seemed to be in charge. Older gentleman there said he used to be the owner and was just watching over Andy  to give any advice.

    mike

The 71d turn off is less than a mile past umcolcus and the homestead is maybe 2 miles or so further and yes there bisons not buffalo. Jeff is the owner of the umcolcus camps he’s a big rugged guy and he’s real friendly and usually welcomes you when you arrive and ask how’s it going and loves to carry on a conversation.

Headed north again today, taking York's advice to go to Umcolcus Sporting Camps for lunch.  Back thru Shin Pond and then NE. The last 25 miles to the camps were perhaps Maine's fastest trails. long straightaways for miles, nice and hilly, make a turn and more miles of straight. Fun trail.  Need more horsepower!  Pulled into Umcolcus and another turn of the century sporting camp. Impressive place. Lunch was excellent. Trails today were all 8 to 10's, really a super ride.  Not too many sleds on the trails. Andy was working the lodge and said Umcolcus was named after a duck, and pointed to a stuffed duck on the wall. Later I looked up Umcolcus ducks and found no such thing. Must have been the name of a pet duck, who now sits proudly stuffed and on a shelf.

(Anxious to hear how Snowbeeler is liking Aroostook County riding, hope he reports).

Mike glad you enjoyed the ride up to umcolcus camps and lunch, and that is definitely a fun ride up there on that trail. I should have mentioned that just a little bit north of umcolcus is the Homestead lodge where you can have a buffalo burger and watch the buffaloes wander around out behind the lodge. Check it out if you have the itch to try that trail again!

After a somewhat dismal day yesterday of a mix of lots of  big and small bumps in the Millinocket area, I left this morning in frigid temps to head north into the big wilderness. Destination at least Shin Pond Camps, better yet Libby's Sporting Camps.

Got to Shin Pond way quick, stayed the north course for Libby's. Almost the entire trip was on freshly groomed trails, and a few that weren't were still smooth and fast. Again, this area has  nice big wide logging roads with plenty of hills. Gas at Shin Pond, lunch at Libby's and back thru Mattagammon Wilderness store,   and Bowling Sporting Camps.

Based on the grooming, and big wide roads,  views of lakes, streams and rivers along with a few mountain views, and very low traffic count,  sunshine good part of day; this would have to be one of the top ten best rides ever. It was Quebec worthy.

Libby's Canps is nothing short of right out of the early 1900's. It is an Orvis Fly Fishing approved camp. I would have to rate lunch there as the best ever trail stop lunch. I had been told it was amazing food.

On the way back I also poked around the Northeast Outdoor Center, big log cabin restaurant and rental cabins that appeared very large.

Pic of the large building the the Mattagammom Wilderness store. All others pics of buildings inside and out is Libby's.

Snowbeeler,  I must have been ahead of you as at times there were no tracks in the fresh groom. I am guessing after shin Pond I went north and you went northeast. So glad you had a good day. Presque Isle Inn should be a nice step up for places to stay, heard it was great.

Mike if you stayed on  trail 71d instead of going into Libby’s that’ll take you over to Its 81/85 where you would take a right, just a little bit down 81/85 on your right you’ll see a side trail that goes to Umcolcus sporting camps another old set of log cabins and Jeff the owner is a great guy and the food is great! After lunch you head back out to 81/85 and take a right and head back to shin pond that trail is also all wide logging roads and very similar to the Quebec trails. I think you’d enjoy it you should give it a shot if you have time. You could also do the loop the other direction and go up through shin pond.

We are down the road from you at Katadhin. Wish we were at Baxter too. We did 160 mile loop today went northwest then south to Wildwoods. Had 125 miles of 9-10 trails and 35 miles of crap. Crap was from NO grooming not lack of snow. We are doing another loop tomarrow going a little south east and then north east. Should be a little over 150 clicks. We are 5 and can swing by Baxter on way out if you want to join us. Like 8:30 ish.

Make sure you head up to Mattagammon, shin pond up to Libby’s camps or Umcolcus camps and loop back around the trails are on mostly wood’s road it’s a nice 200 mile loop from Millinocket. All those places I mentioned are great places to eat with very nice people that run them.

  11. We did 260 miles yesterday left the Timber cruiser club house over through Jo- Mary’s trails down to KI. Over to 85-86 up to Kokadjo then across Moosehead to Birches up around Pittson farm and NE Cary and back through Jo Mary to the Timber Cruisers. Trails were fine the first 80 miles but after that it went down hill quickly! I’ve been riding that area every weekend for the last 10 years and I never recall the trails that bad, usually you’ll run into a few sections during your ride that are bad but never almost the whole day. I also can’t ever remember meeting so many large groups of sleds were talking groups of 8-10 sleds! I know the lack of snow and the type of snow that we have isn’t the ideal snow to make good trails that will last. I’m also not bashing any of the clubs in that area either because all the years I’ve ridden in that area they’ve always done a top notch job. With the Canadian border being closed I’m sure that’s creating the extra traffic. So let’s just say that 260 miles took all day and half night to do! I’m sure during the week it’ll be a little less busy.

I can't get to quebec this year so off to maine Sunday.  no return date as of yet plenty of time off to enjoy the trails.  hope there at least close to quebec quality?  riding out of Millinocket with the new snow should be good to go.

Blueblood other than the week in February that we go to Quebec I ride out of the Millinocket area every weekend the trails in that area are mostly on roads it’s a very nice area to ride several different loop options you can do. The 5 years that we’ve been going to Quebec we’ve stayed either at the Delta or the universal and rode those areas are the trails in the Millinocket area compatible to those I will say some are very close. All the clubs in that area do a great job with the trails but I can almost guarantee you by the end of the day you’re going to encounter some beat up trails and your going to see a lot more sled traffic than you would during the day in Quebec especially on the weekend. Plus it’s a little more busier in that area because of the Canadian border situation. The snow situation in the area is pretty good and getting better each day with a few chances of storms in the next week. It’s pretty hard to compete with the Quebec trail system but I can’t see any reason why you won’t enjoy riding this area enjoy!

Ordered mine also. Got the New England Snowmobile Map  X package. It includes 5 states. Cannot for the life of me figure out how to get the .kmz files on my Iphone and into Guru maps. UPDATE:   Ok got the 5 states that were included on Guru app using Itunes. You can also import using email. Looks like a nice program except, Only certain states are included that allow for detailed base map of streets. New York is, Maine is not. Need to purchase upgrade to Guru Pro to get Maine streets. It is $50 for lifetime or $2.50 per month. Has anyone just purchased the Maine snowmobile map and do the streets show up in detail?

I just have the Maine snowmobile map on the sd card and I just looked at it and it does show the roads and streets.
