Bad accident. We are ok. The train track after you leave club house. We are back to clubhouse waiting for the three guys to give them a drive to cambelton. Their friend went by ambulance and it was a long rescue. Took a long time to get vitals. I am very sad and not sure I feel much like riding. Apparently this guy slid past his friend into the train. Group from Nova Scotia - PEI.

If we are missing posts we are in the clubhouse and waiting. Jean Guy says he's never seen a sled hit at that track.

    Back soon!

    Linda 😂

Awful to hear this Linda. Hope everyone recovers and get home safely.

  2. Where Linda's friends are, Grand Vallee, is on the North shore. That area is known for big dumps and high winds making impassible 'snow walls'. Until grooming equipment get out to open things up, multi-day stays in hotels can be the norm. In truth, most anywhere on the peninsula can be challenging because of the winds. A storm of half a foot with the winds can cause big problems for folks making the loop.

  3. I was thinking of riding that area over the weekend myself so messaged another member (GKW) who left Beauceville earlier in the week and rode to RDL, rode that area a few days this week and returned. Here is what he said after he rode back to the truck last night:

We rode back today from RDL to Beauceville today and the trail was awesome until the last 3-4 miles into 55/75.  The trails by this weekend will be rock hard, but there is more fresh snow on top the closer you get to RDL.  But really 5 miles west on 55 from the clubhouse is excellent.
Keep an eye on the weather and hope for snow squalls and dustings.
There is still an incredible base on all the trails we rode today.

    Good luck!

Today we were taking orange trails off TQ5 as we traveled east. We get on the orange passed Grand Vallee and there is a man flagging us down. I see a bunch of guys looking over the side of the trail. A guy going down hill into a left turn felt his sled start to tip and he bailed off. The sled went off a 50 ft drop. He was lucky to get off.

I was able to help get the sled with my winch. The sled looked just fine. The snow was deep where it landed.

After the sled was up I mentioned the accident in Gaspe. The guy says the man was part of their group. They were from Ontario.

Hope it is just odd coincidence their group is having so much bad luck and not their riding style/inexperience(?)
Your winch has come in very handy a few times if I remember right Jim. I am sure the group was glad you came along when you did. Hope their group gets back without further incidents.

Does anyone know if that local trail 20 (orange)is open from just north of Relais La Cache to Carleton-sur-mer ? It's on the paper map but not the interactive map. I remember some members saying this was a nice trail.

Try the very helpful Dale + Louise in Chandler (http://quebectrails.com/1-877-202-4636
or you might PM smclellan. He spends allot of his riding time in that area so might have intel.
I haven't been through that area this year so no help.
    Good luck -

Heading back up Sunday for 6th week of riding. Temps should be in the teens and twenties again. This will probably be last trip for the season, and time to bring home trailer and sled. Overall it has been a good riding season with over 2000 miles on the "dream meter" as towing calls it. Lecabanon, as always, is a very good host. I love riding but getting tired. Looking forward to seeing new Yamahas at the spring shows.

    Snappy Hank

Nice for you to be retired and able to go whenever conditions are best. Also a bonus you are able to leave sled and trailer. That alone saves time, wear and tear, etc. How did you arrange that?.

Monday morning a group of 5, from Harrisburg area left the Delta about 9AM.  About 9:30 we had a white out snow squall  came thru the area.  The trails were icy from Saturday night/Sunday rain.  These conditions resulted in this accident. Hit a tree.  The man between 55 and 60 suffered 3 broken ribs, cuts and badly broken wrist that required surgery Monday night.  He was discharged from the hospital last night around 8PM and the group headed towards home.  One lucky guy that he only had the injuries that he had.

Best wishes for a complete recovery. Very glad it wasn't worse.

Left truck and trailer at Berniers  tuesday noonish, and rode northeast. Yes the trailer area is smaller but still works. Rode to Montmagny for the nite. Weds rode mostly 5 East to Rimouski. Trail conditions tues and weds perfect. Then Thurs in rain to NB border and over to Cabano. !st time there, stayed at motel Royal.  Cheap, right on the Lake and good rest and bar next door. I would stay there again for sure.

Trails even thursday were near perfect despite 40F afternoon temps. Friday we rode 85 to 35West. For those that have never tryed it, 35 is a ridiculously fast rail bed  that was still fairly flat the entire way back to 547 , where we turned North to pickup 5/75 into Berniers. But the last 50 miles trails were showing some serious wear, snirt and puddles. Then on 5/75 west, about 18 miles from Berniers the Chaudiere river was shut down, and we had to ride bare roads over a bridge for a couple of miles..   The water in the ditches along the trails is rising fast in this area. To top it off last nite they had an ice storm with 1/2 inch of ice on everything. Took us a while to chisel out the truck this morning.

To me, they wil now need some cold and an inch or two of new snow, to get this area back in shape. They still have a deep base on most of it.

Except for the rain it sounds like you had a pretty good trip Tom. You could also have left from the Beauceville Clubhouse and save a bit of driving the black trail in favor of the white. Not sure if you've been through there before but it sits right at the junction of 55, 75. We frequently leave from there and head to Montmagny or RDL for the 1st night.
Tony + his wife Linda are great people and run a nice, clean place there at the Motel Royal. Pub du Lac restaurant down around the corner is always a good bet also. I, too highly recommend both places to QR folks.

  9. I'm with you on the conditions not being the cause. No one else had issues plus cooling the running boards should have relieved it if it was truly not getting sufficient snow. Since the 'stat would affect flow/circulation (it acts like a valve), if bad (stuck shut), you should have seen little to no flow. My money is on something else. Were you running 91 fuel? If no, it could have been detonation caused heating(?) Head gasket/base gasket letting combustion superheat the coolant? Dealer should be able to pressure test to determine engine-to-coolant leakage.
    Good luck with it.

So I can't seem to post photos with an iPhone. I will have to wait till we get home.

yesterday we took eastern most orange trails out of Matane up in to the dead end orange east of Causapscal. Then we back tracked to the Albertville club house. From there we took 587 down to Matapedia and on to TQ5. We stayed at La Coulee Douce.

Today we kicked back a notch. 103 miles. We took TQ5 to 587. We went to the radar tower to see the snow covered trees. After we took 579 to Domaine Valga.

the trails were excellent again today. There is a little ride on plowed road on 579. That was the only complaint. We hit a snow squall that stopped us for a short time.It was strange to be in blue sky's and suddenly whiteout.

    Mt. St. Pierre tomorrow.

Great hospitality and food at Domaine Valga! Their access road intersects 579 at 2 points if I I remember correctrly. When leaving their yard and traveling the road, you come to a split a short distance from their property where the road goes uphill to the left or straight/right. Taking the right fork hooks up to 579 with far less riding the road.

I will be making the switch to 4 stroke next year. After running 595 and hearing that tic Toc while getting rained on I get it now. But I do like my little etec. They have been good to me. Sled is at dealer now. He says it was conditions. Well maybe but I do know I have been riding etec's/sdi in the 600 class since they where invented and if it had been conditions I would have been the last one to overheat. There are many reasons I ride those and that's one of them. It's gotta be really bad to make them overheat. And the first sign of snow the temp comes down immediately. Nobody else was overheating. Nobody I talked to at the copper was having problems either. I have seen much harder trails than what we where on that morning.  Getting sled in loose snow which there is plenty of wasn't helping. And the 2 stroke Cat we towed it back with never went over 152. Kick a ski in the snow and it promptly went down to 130. We unloaded the gear, packed top of tunnel with snow and still got hot. Put the flap right down on the ground. Nothing helped. It would just slowly climb until the light came on. I saw no reason to push it into to limp mode. It acts to me like the Tstat was stuck in a partial open position and it couldn't control the heat. 2 weeks prior in excellent conditions in Vermont it was running at 3 bars which is kinda cool. It usually stays on 4 bars no matter what. I will wait to see what they say tomorrow.

Rain and snowmobiling should never happen together but your group made the best of it and without question, the rental car delivered on the rollback was genius.

Will be interested to hear the final word on your cooling problem. If snow packed on the running boards didn't make any change, it has to be a circulation problem. Water pump, thermostat, or a blockage not allowing the coolant to move through the chassis.

She has had lots of rebuilds. Last at 6k ago. Lots of new parts. The kid had a blast. kwiknick is a rider.

    Yes sir.

Great to see some younger folks coming along in the sport. Kudos to his parents and to you Don for providing positive and supportive experiences for Nick. Lots of 'teachable moments' there. There are so many barriers to entry for the next generation getting into this sport. We all know most of them so I won't recap. I know my son loved his trips to Quebec as a teen but now doesn' seem to have the time or $$ to go. Maybe someday - :spiteful:

The chasis "looks" mint in spite of the 20k you say it has. My neighbor, NHmoose evidently took great care of her. Those engines had a number of issues which BRP addressed with different rings, pistons, etc. Sounds like she is at a first class shop but I would still consider a crated short block replacement instead of a rebuild - assuming the rest of the sled is good enough to justify spending the $$. The bottom end would be suspect now too in my mind since missing pieces from the top end are likely down there somewhere and will come back to haunt down the trail.

Great , very entertaining  and interesting report - as usual!

Will be fun to have some new ideas out.

With the current headwinds facing the snowmobile industry I doubt a company with Honda's market-smarts is going to stick their neck out to enter a market they have no experience in. As was said, these rumors have been circulated before (and often)  without basis or any tangible result.

1500cc 2 stroke? I dont care who makes it, I dont want it, and im a Honda man.

While there will always be those who swear by the 2 strokes, it is increasingly hard to stick by them when all things are factored in. Premium oil and fuel are not universally available - and that is just the beginning of the considerations for long distance riding.

That would also be a bit of an engineering feat since the 1000cc 2 strokes weren't able to survive when BRP and A/C tried them in the late 90s - early 2000s. Bore sizes/cylinder number makes under hood space and cooling  (already tight) problematic for such a beast.

Dropped down from Pittsburg NH to Beecher Falls, Vt. where we entered East Hereford, QC. From there we rode fresh powder - all formerly groomed for the entire 113miles + - . Our objective was to travel 523 to Sawyerville where we would pick up 525 to La Patrie and then onto Chartieville & Pittsburg NH. While traveling on 523 we came to an intersection where a signpost  advised La Patrie was to the right. Subsequently we made the right and followed the directional (arrows) signs as the trail had no number. Well the trail went from steep and wide to a goat path and steeper. Additionally the directional signs became further apart where at times we wondered if we missed a turn off as the snow banks were high. How they formerly groomed the goat path (sled ?) I do not know as it was tight and hilly. It was obvious the trail had been recently cut as remnants of former trees were visible in the middle of the trail...Eventually (*25 miles + -) we dumped out onto trail 525 and turned right - only a few miles outside of La Patrie . The new trail / unnumbered caused us to circumvent Sawyerville in its entirety and roughly 10 less miles than our planned trip. If you choose to take the new trail I suggest you ride with another as we only met one soul (FCMQ Trail Patrol) who  confirmed for us we were going in the right direction and that the trail was recently cut and not yet on the FCMQ map. Had we not met the trail patrol man we would have turned around as we were unsure if we were going in the right direction and off the GPS & paper map. (* Suggested mileage - guessed - could be more - could be less.)

    La Patrie .jpg

Unfortunately Paddy O, this is what has happened in many parts of the Eastern Townships due to the lean snow years the last 10yrs. Permissions for former paths have been lost, signage is poor/non-existent, brushing is haphazard. Glad you were able to find your way. Sawyerville used to be an active area but I don't even know if the Sawyerville Hotel is still operating? It's been a few years -

What do you consider high mileage?  My 2009 1200 and 2012 1200 each have 10,000 miles.  I haven't even thought about injector problems.  Fuel & go!

Probably not an exact comparison, but my wife's 2008 BMW has 180,000 miles, haven't used any additives or had anything done to the injectors on that either.

I was thinking 7K+ Since it is a vehicle that sits a good bit of the time, you would think issues would be more common than autos(?) Maybe not -

My 14 Apex XTX has just over 30k KM no never done nothing for injectors. All good.

My 08 Apex LTX went 58k KM never did any injector maintenance. Did do valve adjustment at scheduled interval.

Certainly high mileage qualified :good: I'm thinking if you didn't have problems, I should relax.

The use of premium gas will assist in injector health as there are detergents in it.

Yup but in the automotive world, that isn't always taking care of the problems. Fuel formulations these days are all blended to try to prevent fuel delivery problems but they still seem to happen in cars.

On ‎2‎/‎12‎/‎2017 at 8:08 PM, smclelan said:

I have 32K kilometers on my 1200, have done nothing, and have had no issues.

Thanks Steven. Yours also falls into what I would say is the high miles category.

I guess the only common thread here is we have all run gas primarily purchased in QC - which may be blended differently than US from what I am told. I guess there is nothing to worry about based on all of your collective experiences. Since fuel injectors have such small passages and tight tolerances, I'm surprised, but hey if it ain't broke, don't worry about trying to fix it.

    Thanks all.

For those of you that remember, we bumped into Andre and Nicole today. We were running from Bernieres to RDL on the poog and they were getting their mail as we were crossing the road. They both look good and we were happy to see them if only for a few minutes. They were always very welcoming as we have made this trip for many years. We always stopped for a snack and gas. They have been closed in the winter for the last few years. I can remember Andre posting whenever the groomer would pass back on HCS. Unfortunately with sleds getting such better mileage than in the past, some fuel stops are not as important as they used to be. Happy life to you, Andre and Nicole, and thanks for your support in our sport.

            Jeff and Sandy

Thanks for sharing this with us. Kinda sad though as it marks the end of another fixture that was always there for many of us. I always wondered what happened to them. Last I knew Andre was doing allot promoting his SnoTrackers  business and the relais was still open - although intermittently. Last several years we have passed there has been no sign out and no tracks toward their place from the RR bed so I figured maybe they relocated. Great people and supporters of the snowmobiling community. Glad to hear they are doing well.

  18. A few years ago we arrived late for a stay at Plein Aire in Pohengamook. They re-opened the kitchen and made sure we were fed with generous quantities of food. The breakfast the next morning was similarly generous. Great hospitality and other than a group cross country skiing, we were the only guests. We only stayed one night. Access is easy.
