mikerider
Okay, the site is quiet this summer so I will be posting some Maine outdoor pictures from the summer of 2015. I am posting on the Bas St-Laurent section since I am the winter post whore for this region. mike July 5th Central Maine 10 miles from the capital dome Lots of Isles. antique boats, wildlife Middle of lake, mini island with lighthouse. mikerider
Mid June Rangeley fishing and kayak A lovesick moose making his way to the camp as we flirted through the window; Maine has more brook trout than anywhere in the continental US Flagstaff Lake & Bigelow Mtn
mikerider
The above pic of the small lake is an example of a pond where no motors are allowed on the pond. It is a step back in time. The road shows an overflowing brook running down a wilderness road.
mikerider
In the evening, my favorite place to go in Rangeley is Bald Mountain Camps. Wine on the porch and best food in Maine. Magnificent views. One of the most meticulously kept Maine Sporting Camps. It is over 100 years old. 2016 Summer/Fall QR get together??? When I posted this suggestion last year, several people at the 2015 winter gathering said they were interested. Place has about 15 cabins. Lake is about 15 miles long and mostly undeveloped. Easy access to the camp. But, it isn't cheap. Located in Rangeley, Maine on Mooselook Lake.

mikerider
That is pretty cool, but in the quietness of Maine's wilderness ponds and lakes, a better name for one of those might be 'Target Practice'!
mikerider
Yesterday was an ocean paddle at the resort area of Boothbay Harbor. We launched at low tide, hugged Southport Island and around Capital Island and open ocean for a few miles to Squirrel Isle. Then into Boothbay for breakfast. A calm sea was a rarity. No porpoises in yet, but seals and Ospreys are seen about. I still need to smuggle Groomer into Maine to take my pictures for me. mike
mikerider
Squirrel Island is pretty cool, old large summer homes on a half mile island, arrival only by boat, its own post office, church, town hall, library. Only a couple vehicles on the island, and golf carts and wheel barrels. The wealthiest of the wealthy. A wooden boardwalk crisscrosses the island to all the camps. mikerider
Boothbay is typical Maine coastal town full of businesses, hotels, restaurants, and lots of boats. The big yachts haven't arrived yet, but soon. Edited July 7, 2015 by mikerider
MXZ700RIDER
Nice pictures. Wifey and I have been to Rangeley for snowmobiling in past years. Is the road kill café still in Rangeley Lake? We stayed at the Rangeley Inn. Hope the notorious black flies are being kept in check? I hear they can be rough in Maine at times during the warm weather. We used to take a winter trip somewhere in Maine from 1998-2004......then started trailering to Quebec region. I say Maine trails are about as close to Quebec trails as anywhere in USA when it comes to scenery....snow...and grooming. Quebec area may have a slight edge....but Maine snowmobile clubs really seem to take pride in grooming up their section of trails.
longriderss
We have been to Loon Lodge a couple times. Good food and a nice log home style facility. If you like remoteness up in the Rangely area, try Bosebuck up near the north end of Auzicohos lake. I know the spelling is off, but a great place to kayak and see the loons & eagles and other wildlife.
mikerider
Azichoss Lake(I can't spell it either} is my wife's favorite kayak ride. We are headed up to Rangeley and Kennebago tomorrow for a couple weeks. mike

mikerider
There were many sporting camps in the Rangeley area way back when, most had raised boardwalks connecting the porches. It is unfortunate that many cabins were sold off individually over the years, A few porches are still connected to this day. Each sporting camp had the famous Rangeley wooden boats, and each sporting camp had its official color for the boats, which still lives on today. Strangely, up until recently, you very seldom saw anything but a Johnson Outboard on them, with the exception of a few Evinrudes. This once was the guide's camp, where the fishing guide got to stay for the summer. Not part of a sporting camp, but next to a wealthy camp owner. It has been nicely restored. And the rich owner's camp, again, nicely restored by recent owners.
mikerider
A couple new friends, including a deer that loved swimming. He got in an out of the water three times just to swim around us. Two frigates decided to lead and protect the mother ship! And yes, Rangeley has danceaurs!
