Friday, March 4 2016, 266 Miles.

After reading the Iceman reports we had to head on up to the snow. 5 guys in total. We left Berniers at 9:00 AM or so for Motel Royal in Cabano. Short way mapped to 212 miles, long way mapped to 272 miles. I mapped a mid rage trip at 244 miles and off we went.

We try to use as many green and orange trails as possible to stay off the superhighways, we find they are often in better shape and way less traveled, and usually hold a few surprises for us. The first surprise was an unfrozen river on one of the side trails, bummer. This added 15 miles looping back to the main. About 90 miles in the 35 had a detour again due to open water.

We had lunch at 11:30 with 100 miles on or so. Trail conditions rate as very, very good. Most everything groomed in the last day tops. With all of the new snow this week the top layer was pretty soft, not the best for top speed or MPG. After lunch we ran into some good friends up from Vermont also at the gas station, what are the odds?

The last tank we needed to go 114 miles or so. At between 105 and 110 3 out of 5 sleds needed more fuel. We got them all straightened out adding 1/2 hour to the day, but we still arrived at 5:00PM with 266 on the dial.

We showered up and headed to the bottom of the hill to an awesome restraint/Pub for dinner. You would never find this as it is not on the snowmobile trail, but is accessible by snowmobile just by following the sign to Motel Royal.

So far so good. The snow and conditions are excellent.

Tomorrow a big loop and RDL for the night.

If there is two tunnels, that is it. If you come to just one tunnel, last I knew it was water underneath all winter and they stopped grooming both sides of that latter tunnel.

No gold found yet in any of them!

Saturday March 5, 2016, 235 miles.

Awesome breakfast at the same pub we had dinner at. The locals all here here too which was a good sign. We started the day at -16F, it was not supposed to get this cold. The nice part was the amazing blue sky.

We had mapped out a nice 220 mile day heading first to Rimmouski for lunch from Cabano, then down to RDL for the night. We had beautiful to die for trails all the way to lunch. We now had the missing ingredients for nice trails, snow and grooming. We did have a 45 minute delay due to a blown belt on my sled binding in the clutch pretty good. We had to pull it off to unwrap the mess. After lunch we continued down the 5 and then off the side trails to do a few of the Route 20 tunnels. We did 3 and decided to save the last one until tomorrow.

We arrived at 5:15 with 235 on the day and all but maybe 20 miles of drifted up fields north of RDL was excellent. The universal was full and sleds were everywhere. It appears we were not the only ones with this idea. We took a cab to Le Cage Au Sports for dinner then out for a bit of entertainment before calling it a night at 2:AM.

Tony at Motel Royal is a great host, nice spot overlooking the lake .

Tony + Linda are nice people and run a clean, nice place. When we were there last winter we were the only people there. I hope they are doing OK(?)

While there's other restaurants up in town, we've always preferred Pub du Lac.

Sunday, March 6, 2016, 200 miles.

Final day of the trip, bummer. We headed out the 5 for just a bit and veered off to use the side trails and come back in more south on the 5. 2 in the group had not seen the low tunnels under the 20 so we had to show them, good thing none had a tall windshield. One guy did lift his head up and the tunnel smashed it back down for him. Wack-o-mole 101.

The 5 was fresh groomed, the side trails were also all fresh groomed. The trails got a bit bumped into Montmagny for lunch but not too bad.

We ate at the St Huberts which is never disappointing.

The next 85 miles back to the truck were a bit bumped up but again not to bad considering the snow and traffic.

We pulled in at 3:30 with 200 miles on for the day.

A super nice trip. We asked the new guy what he thought of the Quebec experience, he said best snowmobile trip for him, ever.
