We are planning our snowmobile vacation for this winter ,we purchased our yearly passes, and we have been only to Val-dor before with the free weekend passes, we will be starting at Temiscaming and we are looking to ride 8-10 days saddlebagging in to Quebec, I purchased a GPS and bought Trakmaps and hopefully that will help us navigate through Quebec.

We like to average 225-250 miles a day riding and we are looking for suggestions on a big loop to do and return back to Temiscaming,

any input would be greatly appreciated

Greg

Go north to Chibogamoe, didn't spell that right. then south east to lake st Jean area and back though Clova. Stay north of 13 and 63. Trails are flatter and faster. Head for Amos area first and go from there.  Good luck and enjoy. Lots of wild life there at least tracks I've seen. Your going to have a great time.

Chibougamau 👍.   Yes definitely take the 63/93 up toward Rouyn Noranda and grab either the 83 and go across towards Clova or go up to Matagami and then on to Lebel sur Quevillon then across the 93. Also you will have plenty of time to spend two days in the Lac St Jean area. Trails are usually best early Feb.  You can’t screw it up tons of trails 83 and 93 are always excellent.

Welcome.

Trakmaps ROCKS.

This makes planning routes on a computer ultra easy:  www.viaexplora.com/snowmobile/index.html

Get this on your phone:  https://fcmq.qc.ca/en/snowmobilers/imotoneige/

Local conditions by region: https://fcmq.qc.ca/en/snowmobilers/trail-conditions/

And regardless of any general routes that you plan, check the grooming reports before going out...
http://fcmq.viaexplora.com/carte-motoneige/index.html

Click "Services" in the upper right corner

Click “Delai de serfacage” (and whatever other "Attraits" you want to see)

Click "Fermer" to close the drop down box

If you switch the view from Carte (map) to Satellite, it's easier to see the Whites (those haven’t been done 3+ days)

THEN HEAD FOR THE GREENS & YELLOWS!!

Hi Greg,

February you should be fine.

Playhard has got it right.  Spend some time on the computer to get familiar with the sites.  Weekends we like to make reservations.  Sometimes there is a hockey tournament in town or a tour group going thru.  During the week you should be good unless there is a special place you want to stay at.

Plan your gas stops for 93 and 83 between the Abitibi region and the Lac St Jean region.  Not a lot of facilities.  Better yet, carry a little extra gas on board.  Around Lac St Jean there are plenty of gas, food and lodging stops.

You have plenty of time in your schedule for a few days out to Lac St Jean, a few days there and your return trip.

Trail 3 around Quebec City gets a lot of grooming, because it gets a lot of traffic, not horrible but avoid on the weekends if possible.

If you're looking to stay near the city this joint is cushy & sled friendly:  http://www.fourpointsquebecresort.com/?SWAQ=958P

There are three main trails between Abitibi and the east (Lac St Jean / Quebec City).  Have you decided on which trails?  Is your goal Quebec City or Lac St Jean or both?  Is this guys only  and any place will do for the night or is it couples and you want a little nicer place?  If it is couples, keep the days moderate and pick nicer places.  The ladies will appreciate it.

A little advice form an old guy for what it is worth.  Try not to cram everything into your first big trip.  It is more important to have a good, safe time and save other sites for your next trip.  If this trip goes good, you will be planning your next trip on the way home.  Is this trip has issues, you may not be talking to each other on the way home.

93 in the north looks the longest but is relatively fast.  83 thru the middle is also pretty quick and a good ride.  63 in the south is quick until the Mont Laurier area.  The population and added street crossings slow you down some.  We have rode 93 and 83 more often than 63 so I'm more comfortable on those trails.

Have you picked out your days in February?

Thank you for your help with our first saddlebag trip in quebec,we are trying to figure out where we should stage from  Temescaming or mount Laurier,  we want to ride 8-9 days and return to Temiscaming or Mount Laurier,we like 225 to 250 miles a day or close to that, we would like to head to Quebec City and then from there we are trying to plan from there,we would like to do a northern route towards Valdor for our last night then back to the truck.

There are 3 of us on this trip we like nice places with restuarants etc, we are on vacation so we like to treat ourselves good LOL.

From Quebec City is the Gaspe possible to make ????????

We are planning on 2nd week of february or we can adjust our plans if needed due to weather ,trails etc.

I am getting lots of good information on  this site and everything is very well appreciated,I know our first trip will not be perfect ,but we will have a better Idea for next Year.

Thank -You

Greg

Gaspe is a week trip in itself.  Save that for another year.

The second half of the trip once you get to St Raymond ( Hotel Roquemont) or Quebec City (Four Points by Sheraton) it is a day up trail 23 thru L'Etape to Jonquiere (Delta - Saguenay Bill's home).  Next day explore a little of the northeast side of Lac St Jean and end up at St Felicien (Hotel du Jardin).  If you have an extra day to use, spend it anywhere around Lac St Jean.  Stay off of Mont Valin east on weekends.  We like to put in a cushion day in case something goes wrong, break down, weather, etc.  You could plan your cushion day around the Lac.

Next day trail 93 St Felicien to Chibougamau (Nordic or other choices).  Then from Chibougamau go on to Amos (Amosphere) which is a long day close to 300 miles but doable because of the trail 93 rail bed from Chapais to Label.  Gas at Chapais even though you will still have 3/4 of a tank.  The rail bed will run you dry.  From Amos you can head back to the truck.

Just suggestions but that will give you an idea on distances.

Feel free to PM me if you wish,

Jack & Sandi

Everyone that has responded is spot on. They have all did the routes they are talking about. The northern routes are the quickest and 200 hundred mile days are very do able. I feel the further south the trails do get a little slower so the 200 mile days can be harder to do. I do recommend the LSJ area. Beautiful trails and lots of snow.  All the hotels mentioned are great. Good food and super rooms. We always think if it takes 4 days to get somewhere it might take 5 days to get back. Don't know what you all ride but some gas stations sell manufacturers oil. Better to take a quart home then run out. Mid February is a great time to go. Have fun and enjoy every day. You are in for a great adventure.  Main thing is be safe.
