Winter Preparations

While most are thinking about swimming pools, boats, motorcycles and warm sunny weather, up here it’s never too early to get ready for next winter.

Spent my birthday and all day today (30 hours in two days for me) unloading a ship at the port in Becancour(south side of river from Trois Riveres). This is where they stockpile the road salt for most of Mauricie and beyond. This ship they tell me was the “petite one” only 42k ton of salt onboard. The larger ship will make one or two visits to unload before September is finished. It holds 78k tons. Thats gonna be alot of trucking.

This one we started on Sunday morning at 8am. 4 tri axle semi-trailers and 2 big off road Dump Trucks. 3 loaders beside the ship loading the trucks. Another loader at the pile where we dump and an excavator on the pile to stack it up. Takes about 12-13 minutes round trip. Give or take. I made 67 trips Sunday and only 62 today. 24 hour operation until the ship is empty. They expect to finish this one off by midnight Tuesday. I’m back to my regular show tmmrw so I won’t be there to finish it off, I just went for Sunday and the Holiday Today here, Victoria Day.

Thought you might enjoy to check it out.

Tres fun playing in the big boy sandbox!

Please pardon my DUH here, but:

Why drop the goods on the pier when this bad boy can just drop it right into the haulers?

You got it. The guys in the loaders and cranes on the ship are all union employees of the port. You don’t want to know how much they were making on the holiday yesterday. Trust me. It was triple time for them. Paid holiday plus double time for working on the holiday. Their normal rate is lets just say between $70 and $80 per hour. Do the math.

Is the salt put in a shelter later Don?

Nope is covered with plastic then a heavy tarp. Big giant mountains.

Here is one finished pile. In back of blue building.

looks like they came in overweight with 42k tons on board if i'm  reading the ship specs. correctly or you got seriously overcharged for the salt.

According to this link its only supposed to hold 29,862 tons gross (I think I'm correct)

maybe you could get a rebate

Certainly could be mistaken on the tonnage. The other truck drivers said this was the smaller ship of the two. I did not talk to anyone from the ship. Very possible they had it wrong. Either way its alot of salt. We get paid to truck it by the hour so don’t matter to me how much it had.

Hi Ice,

Just curious, do you know where they get this salt? Where its mined? Ive heard the Magdelin islands have a salt mine out there.

Yes, I am fairly certain it is mined here.
