SAINT-JEAN, NL - The summer may have officially arrived five days ago on the calendars, but John Jack Lushman still rose Tuesday morning with four or five centimeters of snow at his cottage in Burgeo, on the south coast of the island of Newfoundland.
Environment Canada argues that this very late rush sets a new Gander record for June 26: about two inches of snow fell by mid-morning on Tuesday. In meteorological memory, we had never seen that.

But Justin Boudreau recalls that "snow in June" is not a very rare phenomenon in Newfoundland and Labrador. On June 20, 1996, he fell 3.2 centimeters of snow on Gander, closer to the Atlantic coast, recalls the meteorologist. Not to mention 0.8 centimeters of snow on June 29, 1952, and 0.2 centimeters on June 30, 1995. Dust, but all the same: just before July 1!

The province's transportation ministry on Tuesday urged motorists to drive cautiously by posting a photo of a road in Burgeo covered with a thin layer of snow on social media.

The meteorologist Boudreau said the mercury was hovering around freezing point in Gander on Tuesday morning, and should not exceed 3 degrees Celsius during the day - which would set a new record for a June 26th. The normal for this date is about 19 degrees, but we have already experienced spikes at 32 degrees.

This summer snow obviously should not drag on the ground: Environment Canada forecasted rain for the east and center of the island on Tuesday - with rainfall of 40 to 70 millimeters by the end of the evening.
