So RoadRunner, Trailblazer and all you adventurers. My days of the far, far away wilderness are far, far behind me. But I love reading your adventures of the deep wilderness.  With that said, I would think there would be a whole new world to explore above Chibougoumou  headed north towards Hudson Bay. What a vast area that must be. (hint, hint, and take lots of pics!).

MikeR, that’s funny you should mention that, 603 backcountry and I did a Rockwood Maine to  James Bay run at   Moosonee Ontario via Cochran’s Ontario back in 2015.  We have often discussed running across the south end of Jame Bay to the Rupert River and dropping back down into Matagami.

i remember them telling us at Moosonee in 2015 that it is doable, but apparently at times the sea ice pulls apart in one of the regions between those two locations so you need to have the right conditions.😉

Lots of adventures to do yet, Winter just is not long enough lol

RR, great pic of the sleds on the sea ice. I take it you didn't use the guide at the canyon for the last 100 miles or so to Moosenee,  The biggest thing on my  snowmobile bucket list over the last several years has been to load the sleds on the train at Cochrane and go to James Bay. Been to Cochrane 4 or so times and always missed the train schedule. Have been up to the canyon once but really didn't want to do the whole guide type trip to Moosenee. Train sounded a good way to see the scenery. Thanks for sharing those pics. Not sure I ever remember you posting a story of the 2015 trip.

Train leaves @ 9 in morn.-41/2 hrs. to Moosonee-did it 4 yrs. ago-remember black Escalade on flat car being taken up by one of the elders to run the ice road up to Attawapiskat-sun very low in sky-got frostbite walking 2 blocks in Moosonee!

Mike , you are right, we did this “unguided “ .  Not sure , I must not have gotten this trip on QR,  it was a big run for us and not lots of time to post I guess.

we basically went down the hydro power line,  Moose and Abitibi rivers into Moosonee and than ran the 100 mile ice road back down to the Abitibi canyon.  A fun run for sure.  Here are a few more pics , it was cold there too when we were there! LOL

As I recall, train leaves every other day from Cochrane and not on weekends. Every time I was in Cochrane it did not line up with the train schedule. I do seem to remember it was a fairly reasonable price.

I think train does one return trip each day staying 3 hrs. in Moosonee-we're staying @ Best Western across from station-haven't heard train arrive back yet!

You should be hearing the train most any minute. I have stayed at the Best Western each time and remember it being bed time when the train rolled in.

RR,  thanks for posting those pics. Never heard of any stories of people riding the ice road from Moosenee. Is the ice road actually right down the river?

Mike, the ice road runs east of the Abitibi River, it is 100 miles long and has a manned gate at the lower end. When we got to the end of the road at the manned gate , we did notice a sign that snowmobiles were by permission only. The guy at the gate just waved us through.

We were told about the road in Moosonee ,  they did not mention that to us about any restrictions and we were not back tracking lol.

The ice road was cool, we crossed several good sized rivers, they just plow down onto the ice, over the river, and keep on going.  Ice road truckers for sure! We met two vehicles in the 100 miles of this road😁6DCAF19A-F4E6-41A9-870F-201562B165BD.jpeg.b38f95fa3a5ef0779310028f078b345b.jpeg

RR,    Thanks for posting those pictures, they are great. Hope there was no snowmobile speed limit on the ice road. I have been as far as the outpost/trailer/fuel at Alibiti Canyon. Ray182 and I half checked around for the trail to Moosenee but did not find it and did not want to do the guided tour.

Retired now, maybe I should take a drive up there this summer. lol

Muskoka2,   take the train tomorrow and take lots of pictures. It would save me a long trip to Ontario!  Couple hour layover would be just right to ride out onto the ice, and say you've been there, done that.

Not so sure in this point in my life I want to do another really long saddlebag trip, but I really enjoyed them back in the day. Great memories.

Hopefully mid January if the snow returns. Getting a late start this year. The new 900 is ready to go, but I won't pick it up from Huff's for another week or so. Hope to stay two weeks or so this first trip. Look for me if you come through that way.

I’ll tape a broom stick on the front of your sled with a bottle of Sexy Bomb on the end, that should do the trick.

Over around Smooth Rock Falls knee deep off trail=18"?

Looks like the same issue as western Quebec, not a lot of interconnected trails yet. If I could unload at Kirkland Lake and ride to Hearst I’d be all in but according to OFSC that is not open yet.

I think they showed groomer working east from Hearst yesterday on Ontario Conditions-more snow to west so should be open soon
