Record sale of snowmobile access rights

A sign that the enthusiasm for the snowmobile activity has not diminished throughout the province, the Federation of snowmobile clubs of Quebec (FCMQ) has smashed a pre-sale record of access rights, with 102,008 members, this  which had never been seen since the introduction of this formula ten years ago.

At $ 375 for an annual presale fee, $ 38.2 million had entered the FCMQ's coffers on December 9, the last day when the cost of the entry fee was reduced.

According to Michel Garneau, spokesperson for the FCMQ, presale figures traditionally represent 80 to 85% of all access rights sold during a regular season.  However, the Federation cannot know the number of access rights broken down by region.

With the pandemic that continues, Mr. Garneau does not believe that we should be surprised by the popularity of snowmobiling, just like ATVs.  “Last year a lot of people bought a snowmobile or ATV because they were restricted in what activities were allowed and couldn't travel.  We benefited from that, while the number of snowmobile registrations increased by 7%, ”explains the spokesperson.

With the reopening of borders with the United States, Mr. Garneau says the phone is ringing, since many Americans seem to have bored coming to Quebec to travel the 33,000 kilometers of trails available.  It remains to be seen how many of them will cross the lines to practice their hobby.

 Shortage at dealerships
At dealerships, some are struggling to deliver the 2022 vehicles they've sold and are offering their customers to cancel their orders in favor of a 2023 model, Garneau said.  Those who own a used snowmobile should take good care of it, he said, since spare parts are also likely to be scarce.

According to SAAQ data as of December 31, 2020, the provincial park of registered snowmobiles has 222,700 vehicles.
