Club to use 383 as 83 this year.

Right of way denied: difficult for snowmobilers to access La Baie

The owner of land in La Baie has prohibited snowmobilers from crossing his land.  A ban that causes many complications for drivers who can no longer get to La Baie by the provincial track.

Snowmobilers arriving from Chicoutimi to Chemin Saint-Jean encounter a closed portion of trail 83 of the provincial circuit.  They can no longer travel to La Baie and to neighboring municipalities such as Saint-Félix-d'Otis.

According to the president of the Saguenay Snowmobile Club, Jocelyn Charest, this situation is worse than that of last year when a portion was also prohibited.

He had cut us off the local path that we use to get gas, to eat.  We had respected what he asked of us.  He had closed us off.  But this year he crossed it all out, laments Mr. Charest.

“You have to go through Laterrière, it's a 45-minute detour.  If you leave La Baie it's even worse.  "
 - A quote from Jocelyn Charest, President of the Saguenay Snowmobile Club
The owner of these lands, Hugues Harvey, wants in this way to put pressure on the City of Saguenay within the framework of negotiations which have been taking place for several years, and which affect several files.

For three years now, we have been saying, well, we're going to adjust the snowmobile trail, it's important, we also want to adjust this little bit, it's important, but all the pieces that are important to us are left out.  The City has an emergency, we must fix the snowmobile trail, let's fix it, but I too have emergencies and priorities in this file, says Mr. Harvey, also owner of Harvey Corp.  He considers himself to have been fairly patient on this matter.

 Concerns for the local economy

The municipal councilor of the sector Martin Harvey does not want to comment on these negotiations, but he says that the City is taking steps to move snowmobilers elsewhere, because this problem has economic consequences.

These people very often take a detour.  They come to the fishing village, they use our restaurants, they use our entire economy.  For us, for the people of La Baie and all the people of Saguenay, we cannot afford to lose all of this very important economy.  It attracts tourism.  We are trying to find an alternative to accommodate people, he says.

The president of the Saguenay Snowmobile Club, Jocelyn Charest, hopes the dispute will be resolved soon.

For its part, the club hopes that this dispute will be resolved soon because each year, several thousand snowmobilers have to use this sector.

According to a report by Gabrielle Morissette.

If I recall correctly La Terriere's not bad for gas & resto when planning to roll thru the area on a loop.

But La Baie fishing village is a classic for photo opps. And we just never ever want to lose gas stops (especially us Yami pilots)!

Wondering what Mr. Harvey is needing? Could be his only way to leverage fairness? Could be he needs a spanking?

Hopefully everyone gets what they need. And the Stones can sing about it!
