markusvt
We woke up this morning to heavy snow at Windigo. It looked like 6 inches or so on the sleds and snowing heavy. We decided to take the shortcut across the lake and meet up with the 73. I would say north of La Tuque there was 8-10 inches of new snow from the night, and the temperature was around 15F. As we got to La Tuque the snow changed to freezing rain, and then drizzle but there was still a fresh 6+ inches on the trail. Temp up to 25F. By the time we got to Mattawin it was only just spitting rain and up to 32F. They still have a lot of snow and the fresh 6 inches is going to help them when it gets cold again. The trails on the way down were really really nice, and the traffic was very light. I think people have already started moving into their summer programs. Good for us because there still a lot of snow in the north. 57F here at home, the fat lady has sung, Edited March 7, 2022 by markusvt Florida Snowman, mikerider, MrGutz and 8 others 9
doo4adoo
Glad to see its snow up there, heading north Thursday. Like many my back is sore just looking at the pictures. Thanks for posting and the stories. So what is this short cut you say of crossing the lake and onto the 73. I'm assuming this is just GPS that you have or is it an unofficial trail? I wouldn't mind trying this in the future. Thanks Mike MrGutz, dooright, iceman and 3 others
markusvt
9 miles across the lake then a side trail, than a bit of a local road from the camps. Easy! If you need the map or tracks, let me know. Edited March 7, 2022 by markusvt dooright, PLAYHARD and iceman 2

markusvt
Stay on the tracks and no worries whatsoever. There are areas on the lake that do not freeze but this is not one of them. You would need the tracks to do it. Stay away from the railroad. Look at the scale and you can see how big the lake really is. Edited March 7, 2022 by markusvt PLAYHARD and iceman

Jackstraw
We did it a few years back, yes the lake is huge. Took us a little bit to find where you get off. Did eventually find it as it had snowed and no tracks. quebec bob, dooright and PLAYHARD
