Off-season thread

I know that it's the off season, but I've noticed that there have been between 30 to 35 members checking in everyday without much activity. I thought this could be a fun thread to occasionally post what you're up to this time of year. Anything from the weather to trips or activities. Please keep it fun and cordial and refrain from bringing up politics.

I'll start with a list of the damp dreary afternoon here in northern Vermont. It seems like it has been raining every weekend for months.

The local weather guy on the tube says it's been 22 straight weekends that at least one day ( Saturday or Sunday) has had some  Snow or Rain fall here in northern Vermont.

I am currently in St Anthony Newfoundland. We had some very nice weather for viewing ice bergs yesterday. These chunks of 10,000 year old ice fascinate me. The drone provides so much more view and perspective. I will eventually have to learn how to edit the YouTube videos .

Newfoundland 2025

I flew 9400 feet to get to this fella.

Big Ice Berg

Under the Bridge.

The Arches.

Fishermen.

Berg 1 of 3.

Berg 2 of 3.

Berg 3 of 3.

Rocky Harbour.

Real nice videos wng-2! My wife is from NL and I lived there for 10 years working in Air Traffic Control. We had a summer home in Twillingate and saw many icebergs over the years like yourself I was always amazed at their size and beauty. I remember one particular berg that was very close to shore and as we sat watching it all of a sudden it started to rock back and forth like a pendulum until it turned completely upside down! When it turned over the bottom had mud and rocks stuck to it as it had been grounded.

That's very cool.👍🥇

No where near as cool as the berg pics… but I am definitely enjoying our new found power to use the website to its fullest again.  Sometimes I see friends cringe at the pump prices in the bush, well here is a pic from Georgetown DC last month.

Looking like the streak is going to continue this upcoming weekend 😞

Iceberg beer and a Moose burger for my last night on the Rock.

This is the last Berg we saw. I shot this video yesterday morning. 27 May 2025. I was about a mile and a half away.

Iceberg near King's Point, Newfoundland.

Great pics! What are you flying for a drone?  The furthest I have been is just over 3 miles with my old Phantom 4.  I'm currently flying a Mavic 3 Classic and the range is even better. This pic is from a few weeks ago at right around a mile.

Very nice! I went from a Phantom 4 Pro to a Mini 4 Pro. I am very satisfied with the Mini 4 Pro. Most of those bergs were over a mile out. No way to see those bergs closer up without a boat. I flew to 9400 feet to the backside of one of them. It gets a little nerve racking! My Phantom seemed to be having increasing connection issues. I would have never attempted to fly between the sections of iceberg with that one. Or under bridges or through the hole at the arches. All the drone videos can be seen

Here.

I kept my Phantom 4 Pro when I got my Air2 because of the larger sensor. I still kept it for a backup when I got an Air2s with the same size sensor. I got rid of it after not using it for almost 2 years. No connection issues with it at the time. Although the newer drones had much better connection and range.

Knock on wood, I've never lost a drone from loosing connection. I have lost connection a lot and the drones have always started the return to home process. My Phantom 4 did drop from 150 feet up once. Landed in snow and broke the gimbal. DJI repaired it for free. The logs showed that it had a voltage spike. That battery was dead after that.

I kept my Phantom 4 Pro also. In fact I charged all the batteries and my tablet, and did a software update, and took it on this trip. I lost connection on a flight on the Magdalen Islands in 2022 with the Phantom. I had forgotten to set my Return To Home Altitude. When I regained control, I was able to avoid flying into the side of a hill ....

That was a close one. I have my RTH set at around 400 ft.  Usually I get my video feed back by the time it reaches that height.

I usually have it set above any potential obstructions. Not sure why it wasn't set properly that day.

Possibly after an update? That is when I have had it happen to me.
