I have used Collett Communicators for about 20 yrs. They are reliable in all weather conditions and the company stands behind and supports them. Although I have to add that I have only had experience with getting help over the phone; I've never sent a unit back for repair. Battery life is good as long as you remember to charge them each night when on a multi-day trip or overnight before each use. Two miles would be generous but they are great for riding in a group or with family members when it is vital to alert others to a hazard or need to communicate in short conversations. Due to the way the microphones key, it may be hard to sustain long talks but we have never found it to be an issue. Safety is the selling point here and they are great to warn others of an issue. For the types of conversations you want they should be fine. Weight is not a concern - you won't even notice them on your helmet.
I have both the older 900 units (Collett now lists that they no longer support these) and a newer 900 Bluetooth. I like the Bluetooth for listening to music w/o having cords and the unit switches back and forth from voice to music seamlessly so that is never a problem.
I feel the Collett units are pricey but they do what they claim and I don't see any other manufacturers competing in the helmet-to-helmet market. They have a large share of the ATV market I'm told. You may be able to do some research on motorcycle forums and find more discussion about helmet communicators

Concerning to hear this but it is not acceptable to any of us here for you to drop the 'F-Bomb' on the people of Quebec. They too are sometimes the victims of these scumbags - who can be very difficult to identify, apprehend, and prosecute. Thefts in Quebec have waxed and waned in the past 20 years. Some years there are many thefts all over the Province; other years only a few in the 'bad' towns. Drummondville has never been considered 'safe'. I won't attempt to list good or bad areas but just say that I think I speak for most here when I say we always take precautions and that is not really different than most of us do in our country. I have an old saying that "locks only keep honest people honest" but everything/anything you do to make your stuff harder to take is a deterrent.
I agree that you shouldn't have to do anything beyond locking your vehicle/trailer but some towns have people who will take them unless you do more. Then again, there are certainly places in the US where the same can be said.

Anyone know the conditions between Montagmany and RDL?
ThanksJust got back last night 2/10. RDL was very thin. Headed est on 5 to Amqui. Once out of RDL trails were great! Sent a day riding with 2 local brothers, who took us on mostly local trails. Went to Pointe la Croux and to New Richmond. Had to head back to RDL. Best conditions of the season for us!
I think he was looking for conditions further south and west of RDL. You were quite a bit further east and south of where jak was looking.

Really sorry to disagree Mike but a regular drivers license is not listed in the documents accepted for re-entry to the US according to the State Department website requirements for US entry: http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/canada.html
A regular drivers license is not a WHTI compliant document and so would not have to be accepted. As for what you have stated above about US Border Patrol HAVING TO LET A US CITIZEN BACK IN to the Country; that may or may not be correct. I don't know/have never seen it written or heard it before.
With the current state of the world, I for one would not want to attempt entry/re-entry without having exactly the documents listed.
"Entry into the United States: When traveling by air from Canada, U.S. citizens are required by U.S. law to present a U.S. passport book, except as noted in the few exceptions provided on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website.
For entry into the United States via land and sea borders, U.S. citizens must present either a U.S. passport, passport card, NEXUS card, Enhanced Drivers License, or other Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI)-compliant document. Good news!
Today we rode from 55/75 East to St Pamphile, then across 557 from the golf course to RDL.
There is 3-4 inches of new snow throughout the trip, which saved the trails around Beauceville and RDL. Once you get about 8 miles out of Beauceville , things get better quickly. A+ conditions for most of the trip. 10 miles from RDL, you can see that there is lots of ice and dirt in spots, but the new snow did a nice job of hiding it and providing lube and steering.
The truck lot here is jammed with trailers of groups doing the loop. I would not hesitate.
Reports here are that Rt 5 needs more snow west of RDL.

Gary - Thanks for the recent conditions update. Did you ride over from ME or take the 'black trail' to Beauceville and start from there?

Go to Canada Border Services. US citizens entering Canada by land can use a birth certificate and any picture driver's license, doesn't have to be an enhanced license.
I would add that other documents will help, such as your employment ID, any other picture ID etc.

Mike I respect your opinion but the truth of the matter is that no Border Patrol Agent can be "expected" to do anything other than what is written in the law(s) and I would expect you know that from your professional experience. While an agent might deviate from the 'black and white' where you cross, that may/may not be the norm at other crossings or even with different agents at the same crossing. They are under no obligation to let anyone travel in either direction without the required documents. (I remember another discussion we had regarding allowing someone with a DUI in to Canada on here awhile back that was similar b/c folks thought they could/would be 'flexible' - which isn't true.)

IMO, why drive all the way from wherever you are driving from and take a chance on not being able to enter Quebec because you lack the proper credentials? Is it really worth taking a chance?

We had planned to come and ride out of La Guadaloupe (southwest of RDL) this week but called it off after last weekend's disaster.

Just talked to some lads in Saint Anne Des Monts and they said there is a section west of Mont Saint Pierre that is supposed to be shared with trucks but it is plowed bare for a long way 2-3 km! They said in the hills the riding is ok but when you drop down into the towns for fuel.food,beer,or a bed it is very bad! Read bare ground! They are taking a bus to Riviere Du Loup to get their truck!

Its bad when a bus ride to the truck sounds good. Never good to hear a trip end like this - especially the 1st week of February on the north shore of the Gaspe!!

Fin Gourmet in New Richmond would not be a good choice if you are traveling with wife/girlfriend/family. It is your basic 'trucker's motel'. Rooms are tight but it is clean and inexpensive with the restaurant right there and gas across the street. Fine for 'the guys' if you don't need fancy.

It was refreshing to see the reversal of a bureaucratic mistake with such profound consequences for Quebec's Winter tourism handled in a relatively short time. I am glad it is still possible to be heard in matters that affect our sport.

The old St. Magliore relais has now been closed about 4 years. The story we were told was that the club could not afford to continue running it and merged with the LacEtchemin Club. It was a home based day care for a short time but has been vacant and listed for sale for at least 3yrs now.
Too bad because the yard was always full whenever we would pass and it was a nice place to stop -

Glad to see reconsideration and retraction by the Transport Ministry on this misguided regulation. Thanks Greg - and everyone else - for all the efforts pointing out how unfortunate this would be for our sport. This is what it takes to preserve it.

X2. Quite an adventure to get into Perce but the pics show it was well worth it!! You're having a great adventure for sure.
Not seeing any other sleds - and your pics at clubhouses show empty yards too - should concern all of us. If membership is down for FCMQ, it will eventually affect the clubs and of course grooming. Clubs can't keep clubhouses open when no one comes for meals and we lose vital stopping points.
I know it isn't peak season in that area yet (mid-Feb) and the snowfall has been off so far this year, but it is concerning.
Here's to hoping more snow, a great exchange rate, and all the great pics of snowmobiling here on QR will bump things a bit!

btw...saw that a few mins ago.....world is very small ....i read that a guy i went to school with ,back in 77-78-79.....he was from albertville...never seen that guy since then......has been killed by terrorists attack in burkina faso !!

Just curious as to where the one lane bridge in your pictures is? Been through a lot of the trails in that area, but don't remember that. Looks like a little ways down!

Yup. We had some very good riding too as I remember. You were with Scott and I on + off as we headed west toward Montmagny and you to Trois Riviers.

Except for the known issue w/Yamaha Fuel injection relays freezing, IMO, a no start on a new FI sled is usually a battery/starter issue - assuming the fuel system is 100%. You need sufficient voltage to make the electronics work and sufficient amperage to provide cranking/rotational speed for combustion. A battery that is well cared for will last longer than one that isn't but more than 3 or 4 years on a battery is a crap shoot. They get pounded and everything falls out of the plates eventually plus the manufacturers seem to use the smallest unit to save weight and space.
