  1. Linda

You'd be surprised at how many men out there riding a sled know absolutely nothing about it or what to do when a little hic up happens. It's always good to have a basic knowledge of the simple things that can be troubleshooted or repaired on the trail, simple stuff like recognizing when a plug fouls and how to change it, understanding the sound of a belt just before it rips apart in pieces through out your cab ,checking the chaincase oil level.

I have rode with guys that never even brought a spark plug wrench with them and entirely depend on others to bail them out when in trouble.

There are still men out there that don't know how to change a spare tire, these guys very well may be riding a sled on there down time and won't even know how to change a belt or a plug.

Beware Linda, know who you ride with and their knowledge above all try to be independant as possible.

Good luck with your new ride, long track the way to go.

If your going to buy a Skidoo, a mechanics course is mandatory. lol!!! Just kidding, I couldn't resist.

    Linda,

If you plan on buying a longer track sled for next season and plan on riding more off trail, changing a belt will become more common. I ride 95% on the trail so am much like you in that I never have to change it otherthan putting a new on at the beginning of the season. My season is not done yet, planning on still going to Mont Valin for one last run. Not expecting anything fantastic but there is still snow in the mountains.

  2. If your looking to go for one last ride, Mont Valin is the place to go. I'm heading up on April 4th and will sled Thursday and Friday. The weekend of the 7th is the big party they have up there every year and will be packed with sledders. It's my season ender every year.

  3. does anybody know were you can stay in a hotel near the trails

Montpelleir is a small town and when you enter into it there is a restaurant/bar on the right and the parking is on the left. In that parking are there are rooms but I have never stayed there and don't know the phone #. If you want something more high end there are some nice places close to Montpelleir but again I don't know the #. I have only seen them while sledding. I'm sure you can find all the info on the FCMQ website for that area.

One thing you may want to consider and that is to do a one night saddle bag tour. We used Montpelleir last year as a starting point and headed into Mont Tremblant Park and went to Saint Michels des Saint. We stayed at Le Central. This can be done done easily in one day taking your time.

  4. The trails in that area are amazing... if you have never been... try it.

Road crossings??... if your going to head towards Mont Larier I think you may have three. lol

A couple of pics from Montpelleir.

This was taken about 15 minutes out of Montpellier.

This one was taken on our way back and is 1 minute from the parking lot. We decided to go up in the hill and have a beverage.

  5. It's crazy to drive to Mont Laurier. Go towards Ottawa cross the river and unload at Montpelleir. It is about about a 30 minute drive from Ottawa and there is tons of snow. From there you can ride your sled to Mont Laurier or to Mont Tremblant Park. Trails are super sweet this year as they have been getting snow the whole time we have been getting rain.

To get there from the bridge.... 401 east to 416 north, in Ottawa take 417 east, exit Nicholas and go to King Edward St., cross over the river into Quebec, Take hwy 50 east, exit at Thurso and take that hwy north to Montpelleir (sorry I don't know that hwy #, but there are signes saying Montpelleir).

  6. Unfortunatly both Yami's,an apex and a nytro where tinkered with by two guys that know how to set up a sled and spent more time playing with the suspension then riding them including changing the skis. The end result was selling them and there back on Doo. I'm not starting a bashing thread just stateing from experiance.

    Whatever....

Back on Track... not this year but the warmest it's ever been when I was there. April 2010

  7. The problem with Yamaha is that there handling and suspension are still in the stone age, although they may be reliable, I would gladly give up some reliability for a sled thats actually fun to ride and actually turns.

Spoken from a person who has no idea on how to set a sled up, or by a person who thinks they can buy a sled right from the dealer and it should handle amazing without touching it. Ignorance to the fullest!!

  8. this is just too good to be true :yahoo: me and the boys from maine are thinking about going up to mt valin on may 6 weekend dors anyone think there will be snow to boondock on :nea: i know some of you guys said you were going up let us know do you think we can unload at the ski area thanks guys turbo jim :good:

Our plan is to stay at the ski hill but we were told by someone we know that goes in May, we may have to trailer up a liitle higher. Now this apparently is the case most years for the month of May. However, looking at the pictures from Quebec 1, the amount of snow they still have starting from the ski hill should be fine. Our plan is to sled on the 5th and 6th or we may go the following week.

They are not grooming anymore so riding will be just like off trail and the hydro line will be a blast. Enjoy!!

  9. Well it's that time of the year to head up to Mont Valin for our final ride of the year. Bucky and I with a few others this year are heading up Wednesday night and will be riding Thursday and Friday. Usually I am posting before hand to get the snow conditions, however not this year! Now I am posting to see if we bring our shorts or snow pants to ride in??

  10. We have to be more considerate and think twice about our actions ! This is how we loose trails !

Also i know their is snow up around the valins but im sure the official date snow permiting is Dec 1st for all of quebec ?

We must also evaluate the so called boondockers that are all over non marked trails this is really having a huge negative impact on our sport in Quebec.

What are the rules for that area? Whenever I have been there, I was told by some locals that you can run the ski hill as long as it is not open and they are not grooming. As well, off trail riding seems to be the norm there. I have to admit, when I am up there I am off trail as much as I am on it.

  11. I have to disagree with Iceman and Shane in saying that this ban may help save some trails. If the loss of trails is due to loud exhausts, which are already illegal in Quebec, then this should be the focus and not enforcing a curfew.

There is one thing you are not considering and that is the people who work all day, get home and see their family and get heir kids to bed and then meet with some buddies for a ride. This is me in large as unfortuntaley most of my riding is at night. I live right next to the Quebec provincial border and many times we head out around 8:30pm and are back at 12:30am.

  12. going up thursday will let you know when i am back. a group i am meeting up with left sunday and i have not heard anything yet so i assume its good, weater is showing snow next 2 days.

    Mike

Thanks Mike, any info would be great. Our plan is to leave on Wednesday of next week.

  13. Does anyone have any recent info on the conditions in Mont Valin. I have been going there for the last three years in April as our last trip of the year and there has always been lots of snow. Hoping for the same this year.
