I used to water ski and even bare foot in my younger days but now being an old fart has it 's advantages, I get to guard the beer cooler. Grin.

Cool boat for sure and will do. I guess many sailboats look the same when your zipping by but if you see this one, Clair de Lune V, it is us.

Well if you do the annual poker run from Kingston to Prescott I may have watched you go by.We used to keep our sailboat in a Montreal yacht club when I lived there and travel up the seaway to 1000 islands for our summer vacation. For the last number of years, we keep it in a marina just east of Kingston and travel by car to it. I usually have a seasons pass for the park islands. Yup 1000 islands and Lake Ontario are a boaters paradise. We did witness an incident in Clayton where they have check in by video phone that scared the heck out of us and swore us off of using those things to enter the US, but it is a little long and best told over a beer swapping boating stories.

Yes you do get guards like that just like you get during a routine traffic stop a cop who appears to be on a power trip. But consider this, not all people looking to do the western world harm these days have a certain look. Lots of cases of home grown terrorists. Could it happen that some one decides to pose as sledders to transport illegals or bomb making equipment into the country, anything is possible. Or perhaps on a less sinister note they are checking that you are not importing stolen sleds. These guys are working for all of us trying to keep our countries safe.

I think Ice man touched on a few good points, I have often crossed by boat across Lake Ontario and also a number of different land crossings with a motor cycle. I have noticed a big big difference in the way US border guards act toward us since 911. You Americans folks may not notice coming back into your own country, but for a foreigner there is that extra edge of precaution and I notice it in the manner of speech and questioning. Big difference to the reception I get returning to Canada. While it may only be a drug, dwi or some other crime you did in your youth, remember border gaurds are the first line of defence in security to any country. They don't know you and any red flag on your record will set things in motion. The very worst is not mentioning something or not being truthful and they find something in your record. The laws are there to protect the country and it's citizens and zero tolerance to any offence is the easiest to police. I am not sure if any of you in the US can get a program called Border Security, it is all about The CBA and how they handle people coming into Canada. It is a real eye opener on how they pick up on people not being truthful etc. I'm not saying rejection over a old arrest of 20-30 years ago is just, but it is sadly in part a reflection of the state of the world today.

Sad to hear. This brings up something I have been noticing more this year than ever before. While it was not an issue in these accidents it is still important. Used to be when you gave a hand signal to on coming sleds of the number sleds in your group, most would reciprocate. I seem to pass more sleds that either ignore you or give a silly little wave back than those who signal back.

Just got back from Montreal snow then freezing rain then lots of rain down there pretty sloppy. Up here near Tremblant we faired much better. My brother in law tells me it was all snow yesterday then some rain and mild today. Driveway has about 4-5 inches of wet snow that is fast crusting up and a bit of powder on top. Looks like we did not lose any snow but gained some. Looks like mid winter here. The local club says they will groom all trails tomorrow. We are headed out tomorrow, we should be in good shape through the weekend.

Running on groomed trails assuming that your next planned gas stop will be open, he hasn't run out, you won't get detoured or not expecting that the place burn't down overnight can get you in trouble. All of the above has happened to me over the years. Not planned for, not our fault but Sh*t happens. Carrying gas is a lot less inconvenient than the alternative, so I carry gas.

Looking for a Recommendation for Good riding close to NY Border

In planning your rides, be sure to take in devils mountain and the relay. Fantastic view from the top. Also there was a trail called the CIP trail on the mountain that went higher to the cell towers. Not sure if it is accessible any more but quite the view there. Number of years sice we were there, but one of the days we were all the towers and trees were heavy in frost and we were in the clouds very cool. -
Left the Laurentiens today for errands in Montreal. Mostly snow there and 4-5 inches of snow down here before it turned to freezing rain. Rain in both locations later. This pattern has repeated it's self every major stom this year, as long as the snow is greater than the rain, it all makes for a nice trail when it gets groomed and temps drop back down. Colder weather Fri for my area and looks like snow for Sat, Sun and Mon.

None that I am aware of. You could ask when checking motels if they have video cameras in the parking areas. A good precaution is to bring heavy chains and locks for the sleds and disable the truck by removing a main fuse so it won't start. -

Duhamel, or St Jovite ( now called Tremblant ) both closer to NY than Mont Laurier by a good hour or so and in fact all 3 places are accessible to each other by multible trails. I live 20 minutes from Tremblant and I can tell you that there is plenty of snow and trails are in good shape. Duhamel is limited in terms of accommodation I would think. In Tremblant I would suggest hotel Vaccances Tremblant or comfort inn. Both are on the major hwy coming in 117, lots of restaurants to choose from and both are right on a groomed trail that while it dead ends in Tremblant, 15 minutes ride will get you to other trails with lots of options. -
Well since sleds in general disappear at an alarming rate it is not unreasonable to assume that many are not just stripped for parts but rather re registered and resold. That takes a more organized ring and that then poses the question, could a dishonest dealer or theft ring have and use the dess software to reprogram stolen sleds?

Be advised that chutes Windigo, the little trail side motel is apparently closed this winter. Village Windigo a few miles away is top notch but much more expensive, maybe too expensive for a father son adventure.
-
I have been using this for quite a number of years, so far either it really works, no thieves wanted my sleds, or there were no thieves in the area when ever I have used it. 3/4 braided steel cable and 1/2 inch thick hasp.

So dynomite if you end up going let us know how it was. Been a few years but the wife always wants to go back there.
-
Yes I was sort of confused too, but I thought since he posted on the Laurentien board, mentioned Mekoos was booked that he was talking Ferme Neuve - Mont Laurier area. Here is the link to le Village Windigo. It is maybe 15 minutes away by sled from les chutes Windigo motel. http://lewindigo.com/

He didn't say the quality of chain only that they didn't bring cutters but used his hacksaw. Yes guessing it was locals who knew the sled was there but didn't know it was chained. He was away at the time.
-
They are not the same place see my other post.
-
Since you mentioned a little more classy, I assume you mean village de Windigo and not the chutes de windigo. We used to saddle bag from here to the chutes de Windigo every year, but a few years ago the wife wanted something a little nicer. We tried the village de Windigo. It is all little condos scattered around this park like setting in the woods and along the Baskatong reservoir. There is a large log dining building and outdoor hot tub. Very nice, we had a really nice condo over looking the reservoir, fire place, jacuzzi tub etc, sleds parked right outside. It was all inclusive, condo, meals, tips at the dining hall/ restaurant etc all included. If your looking to score brownie points with the wife, yes do try the village de Windigo.

We meet a couple of guys yesterday while out on the trail. One had a brand new skidoo grand touring, first day out with it and only 130 miles on it. He had started out the season with a new Artic Cat but with only 700 miles on it thieves broke into his garage cut a chain he had around it with a hacksaw he had in there amongst his tools and made off with it. All kinds of other goodies in there he said but all they wanted was the Cat. I think he plans on sleeping out there with this one.
-
Enjoy. Meanwhile back here closer to your chalet it is still snowing and 30f 4-5 inches new snow but wet snow ball snow. We plan on sledding but if it starts to rain maybe not. Monday looks like perfect weather and my love will be working so I may wait till then. Grin.

Never had an issue on shiney paint but on my flat blackYammie the edges of the sticker keep peeling back. I could see losing it. I never was a fan of putting the sticker on the windshield in case I break it in an "oops" moment, but I think I will have to re think of hat next year.

That's what I hear too. Going out to pack my lake trail and mark it before all this snow starts to causes slush problems.
