Gaspe Newbie....general route questions

Hi, Hoping to see the Gaspie for the first time this year.

Assuming we'll start in RDL. I've read many Gaspe trip reports on QR and also have spoke with some folks in hopes of roughly mapping the best route.....assuming 5-6 days on the sleds.

Can anyone provide some further guidance for priorities, (towns to visit, stay on 5 or hit some interior trails, see the Chic-Chocs, clockwise or opposite, etc) for a first timer?

Thx, John

My preference from RDL is to ride first day to Point ala Croix first day about 230 with a stop to see Groomer on the way. Then the TQ5 to 595 through la cache to Murdochville. Then down the 597 to perce to see the rock then tq5 towards gaspe for the night. Then the North shore the most pictureseque then back to rdl. I always check the forecast first, looking for the best weather for the North Shore. Otherwise I will reverse it depending on weather. Will be there in March for our usual loop.

A very good route suggestion.

X3. and if you get in trouble w/weather skip North shore IMO, interior is the best part of Gaspe'

Also be aware you're very far east and daylight is at a premium this time of year. With no time zone change in Quebec (new brunswick to the south does recognize the 1 hour time difference) you're going to have to haul ass to get in 200 miles before the 4pm sunset

I just returned from the Gaspe yesterday, huge snow in the mountains and windblown with huge drifts from just west Of Mont St Pierre around the tip pas Grand Vallee'. The interior trails and south shore were spectacular. I'll give the groomer operators credit, maintaining that north shore is no easy task and takes a gutsy person to run a groomer in that environment. I think Id rather ride clockwise and do the rugged north shore first while Im still fresh, then as the week wears on and the muscles start to stiffen you're on the the south shore back to RDL for awesome cruising.

Regarding your route noted above.....

Heading out of RDL....I assume to simply stay on 5 to Rimouski, then maybe cut down 579 to 587, to back on 5....headed towards Point ala Croix?

Any idea on the mileage from Point ala Croix to Murdochville via the route you noted (appears to be 180-200 miles)?

Any gas stops further than 100 miles between Point ala Croix and Murdochville?

Thx, John

Cross point to Murdochville is about 190, plenty of fuel on the TQ5, fuel in La Cache then Murdochville. We do cut down the 579 to 587.
