Picked up a Garmin Tread Premium with the group tracking to install.

My Montana 600 worked well but was a 4” and this is 5.5” so I’m looking forward to setting it up.

My old eyes aren’t what they used to be. 🙂

why i am running a tread 8" overlander.  i actually had a 5.5 for part of the season last year and the difference between them was huge.

Haven't unpacked my maps yet so can't remember the trail numbers, but south of Montmagny is a really nice mountain, groomed to the top with a lookout tower.

Going east, trail 35 is a RR bed that goes forever. Trail #5 is fairly nice, look at the map, about 30 miles before RDL, leave #5 and make the loop up by the St. Lawrence, it eventually turns into #526 and goes right by the Universal. My favorite is #55 to St. Pamphille,, then the short trail to #35, at end of RR bed is a club house, jump on 526 N to RDL. Or, when you get to the St. Pamphille club house (golf course), take the more southerly green trail to the RR bed #35. This goes over a mountain and there is a newer restaurant about 20 miles past the St. Pamphille club that is on a lake and has great food.

is that the top of the ski area on 547 or is there another mountain you can go up?

I question how many riders have the required $500,000 limit. I've owned an insurance agency for 34 years and most people want minimum limits, this could prove costly if you check the block verifying that you have required coverage.

Personally for the 40some odd dollars I will keep the coverage that comes with the pass. Don't forget you are also buying legal defense when you buy a policy of insurance, how far does 40 bucks get you in an attorneys office?

hell I have 500k on the sled,  1.5 million umbrella and I still would leave the 500k on there as I'd rather a Canadian insurance company being involved if theres an issue.

  4. Actually Lac Du Repos is not as isolated as it seems. It is located on a plowed road and is less than 60 miles from St Michel Des Saints. :drinks:

Chapelle to me isn't bad considering its 40 miles from town and theres no power but Apica should be able to be filled from a regular tanker truck run

  5. I would like to get out this week end and cover some new ground. I am thinking about heading towards Berthiersville and seeing what that area is like. If anyone has any input on this area please send me some suggestions. Places to see, trails to take, trails to avoid, places to stay, places to eat, things of that nature. Thanks.

On a side note, I read about some guys heading to La Gaspe, this past week. Lets hear about that too.

scorpionbowl is doing Gaspe this week, he'll probably post Monday

  6. Me and zeusand arrived at the Gouverneur hotel in Shawiningan on 01/19

We headed out on the 20th at 6am, rode tq 3 to La Malbaie and stayed at the Fairmont hotel, we arrived at 3:45 pm 250 miles.

Trails conditions was 8 to 10 and temps was -5 to 10f for the day, the sun was out perfect riding conditions.

    Sun up.

    Had lumch here, great burgers

    Arriving at the Fairmont

On the 21st we Left the Fairmont at 7am, took trail 378 (which was a fantastic trail) back onto 3 to to the ferry crossing in Tadousac.

Stayed on 3 to Sacre Coeur, and then on 93 through Mont Valins to Jonquiere and stayed at the HI.

Another great day of riding, trails were great and temps were perfect.

We arrived at the HI at 5:30 250 miles

    Heated garage is nice.

On the 22nd, we rode with the one and only Saguenaybill, along with farmerold.

We rode around Lac Saint-Jean, another 250 mile day,

Trails was good and temps started at 15 and droped by the end of the day to -5.

    zeusand, farmerold and saguenaybill.

    We had lunch here,

    IMG_2079.jpg

On the way back to the HI, my sled reached it's 1st milestone,

    IMG_2083.jpg

I was keeping a close eye on the odometer so I could take a picture, at 9980 miles the Engine management light started to blink.

I thought, Oh shit! the engines gonna blow before the 10k, it turned out the plug at the air box came loose, snapped it on and good to go.

On the 23rd, we left the HI at 6:30am, the temps started out at -15f. We took 83 to 23.

As we got up in to the mountains torwards L'Etape the temp dropped to -27f, trails was a 10 all the way.

IMO, when the temps get that cold, the best thing to doo is keep riding, it's when you stop you can realy feel the cold.

We made it to Saint-Raymond for lunch at 1:00 pm, fueled up and headed back to the Gouverneur.

We arrived at 5:45pm, 300 miles.

This is where we had breakfeast before L'etape, did not catch the name.

    Gas stop in L'etape

    IMG_2089.jpg

Total trip, 1100 miles in 4 days, very little traffic out there, which makes for great trail conditions.

    Headed home on the 24th.

thats mont apica, we stopped there the day John blew his chaincase out, that trail that sucked heading back to the HI was just past there heading north.

Glad to see someones getting the miles in this year, I've not been riding much between the kids and the new job. No QC this year.

  7. I have a canon Powershot A540. It is an inexpensive camera that works well in the cold. I usually get a week out of the batteries between charges. There are many options out there, just make sure whatever one you choose takes nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) batteries and you will be fine. Lithium ion's are not worth a shit in the cold.

    Happy Holidays!

    Karl

Lithium Ions are the best in the cold. I can get 2-3 days from my GPS with LI batteries vs less than a day with regular batteries and my camera which takes AA goes a season with a set.

  8. No I didnt even consider the Nuvi. I wanted the most rugged and durable unit they make. It's like anything else.....you get what you pay for. I'm sure a Nuvi would be great if you were to only use it in a vehicle.

the nuvi 500 is made for motorcycles and is waterproof like the Zumo

  9. Bienvenue, Virginie.

Evasion Sport is one of the top dealers in our area. I'm a SkiDoo guy, but their shop has been helpful to me and is welcoming to all. They are the top choice if you want to rent a sled here in the Saguenay (in my opinion).

    Dozer

it's nice they are open sunday mornings for a couple of hours as we discovered a couple of years ago when a sled in our group went down.

  10. Thanks guys, that last picture is sweet. I just went to check on my new ride, can't wait for t-day. Hopefully somebody will want to head with me. If not, I am sure I will meet at least one person up there. If you go by a blue tundra with trailer and NY plates, honk! Mapquest says 6hrs 3min. 320 miles. I am looking into reservations at L'auberge 31, can you hit the trail right from the door of the place, or do you have to trailer? I realize that this question is weather dependent, I am talking about an average US thanksgiving week end.

Here is a pic from my first, and only time through Mt. Vallin. The whole time we were in the park, all I could think was...

this is what it's all about! I did run out of gas right there. Note to self: when you get off the ferry in Tadoussac, get gas before you head through past LaChapelle. That was the most amazing overall single day cruise up to date. Hopefully many more to come.

auberge 31 from TQ93, can't miss it heading from Valin towards LaChapelle, unfortunately I'm one of the ones from Scorpionbowls group that won't be making it this year, change of jobs put a crimp in winter plans.

  11. I'm not interested in leaving anything near the city. Heard too many horror stories. Rob's included.. I have an option to ride from Ft kent, ME that might come into play as well. Depends on the guy with the house in Ft Kent and his schedule.

From ft kent it's quick ride through Cabano and then up to Matane to catch the ferry but you'll need to ride 10 miles of NB or go way out of your way to go through Estcourt to do that. The area that borders maine is some of the best riding I've ever done from Jackman out to Matane. Never ridden the north shore from sacre coer to the ferry but my buddies say it's a real nice ride. Make it a big loop and come back the opposite way you head up. Quebec city to Ft Kent is a good day ride.

  12. Easy is an understatement, I made it from st george's benedict arnold to holiday inn in 8 1/2 hrs, so how far from there jackman is?

Right around an hour, depends on border crossing time, last 2 times I went through it took under 5 minutes but had a friend who was held up there for several hours this past winter.

  13. they made check-in at goosebay and are 6:55 behind the leader based on the timesheets. With some good luck at the pace they ride they should be able to catch up to a fair amount of sleds tomorrow. They will head out 7:30 tomorrow morning after the required 16 hour layover and I'm sure Dana will update this site tonight.
