Looks great considering the low snow. Anyone have any suggestions for a launch point for a Western Quebec loop? In the past we have left from Mont Laurier, the Classic or even LeCabanon but with the section of 63 gone it would require backtracking unless 43 would be in shape. Honestly have never ridden down South and West of Manawaki but I assume it's not great riding or I would hear more about it. That being said we were thinking of driving up to Ville Marie and launch from there this coming weekend for a week of riding the Abitibi. Any other places South of there that has decent conditions and a decent hotel to launch from? Was thinking Rapid des Joachims, Kipawa or something else closer

I have never unloaded west of the Classic.  I agree, the loss of 63 really makes getting to Val D’Or and points North/West difficult.  All the way up to Clova and over or up 43.  I have never done 43 but I recall hearing some portions run the roadside, requiring decent snow.  I miss the Forestel.  We saw a few frosty mornings in that parking lot

Also curious about 43, don’t recall hearing much about it. As you noted, the loss of 63 stinks.

  2. Hi, hoping for some real-time info on conditions.  Friends want to start in St. Raymond, head NE on 3 to Tadoussac, then across Mt Valin, the top side of Lake St Jean, then back down 355 to 73 to St Raymond.  I think this is doable at the moment, can anyone confirm?

We never made it to Quebec last winter we had all our reservations, trail permits, we left I pulled out of my driveway looked in my mirror and my tire was leaning out on trailer further investigating found my trailer axle broke.

So I replaced both axles on trailer , electric brakes all set for this winter , we got 2 new sleds ordered hopefully coming in before the early permit deadline.

We got rid of the heavy 4 strokes turbos they where too much for me to handle any more .

It was good hearing from you have not seen any activity on Ontario conditions from you.

    How old were those axles?

  4. Hi QR....several years back we ran quest from the Comfort Inn in Mont Laurier.  I know we went 13 west, to 322 northwest, to 63 northwest, and eventually heading up 386 north.

I vaguely remember dropping down 386 (from 63) briefly, to an outfitter than had gas.  But, on 63, it seems like there is no gas from where 322 ends, and the outfitter I mentioned.   Can anyone confirm gas along that route and/or if the outfitter on 386 (south of 63) is still there, with gas?

Edit:  Also lodging along this route.....assuming we want to travel 200-250+ miles the first day from Mont Laurier.  I thought we stayed in a notel motel type place in Le Domaine, but can't remember and there's nothing indicated on FCMQ about lodging along this route.

I bought a choko adventurer (https://chokodesign.com/ca/adventurer.html) last fall.

The choko was $270 or so. Great quality, very warm, waterproof, etc, etc.  While in the gaspe last February a tour guide commented on my jacket “that’s what everyone should be wearing up here”  I said if money was no object I would have got the absolute 0,  but my cheapness got the best of me. He said “nope, that model choko is warmer, and a better jacket”

Was he right?  No idea, but more knowledgeable than I am.

Regardless I am very happy with it and would buy another.

I had the Adventurer from Choko. I “upgraded” to a high-end Klim (forget the model but it was their most expensive). I like the Choko better. Choko is warmer with better pocket options. And did I mention noticeably warmer? Sold the Klim and went back to Choko Adventurer. Have heard great things about Doo’s Absolute Zero......but it’s nearly 2x the cost of an Adventurer.

I wish to apologize to fellow QuebecrRders.  Over the past few years I have posted much about the region I ride, my rides, new and old friends I have met and socialized, and the place I stay. Apparently the number of times I have mentioned the latter, the place I stay, has become a problem, as this business is not a paid advertiser on QR.

Mentioning this business was only meant to have people considering a snowmobile experience in Quebec to see there are many great places to stay and this is one of them. Combined with pictures showing what it is like to ride this area and how good it is, describing the many club houses, the many other Americans that stay here, I thought I was helping QR gain new members, maybe some who will become paying members, and have more people support the Quebec trail system who might normally ride in states. I think I was somewhat successful at this considering the people who have mentioned my posts as a reason for coming, and I believe many joined QR. And part of all this was my enthusiasm of just being in the area and snowmobiling.

But most importantly, I posted what I did as a way to meet new people, and get together with old friends. And wow, did this turn out to be a success. You all will never know just how much I enjoy seeing you, and how thankful I am to all of you including me in your visits and for blessing me with your friendships.

Thanks to one of the kind moderators of QR who took the time to give me some advertising information, and some patience. I will be contacting this business and will make a bold and persuasive attempt at getting them on board as an advertiser.

    Best to you all.

Always look forward to your posts Mike. Please keep them coming. John

Got a new sled, 850X.  It does not come with the compass function my 1200 had which I really liked.  I normally lead and sometimes its nice to know your heading in the right direction!  I looked into getting a Marlin Quest compass but they are $150.00.  For that kind of money I may be better off just getting a GPS.  Not sure.  I would only be using it in Quebec.  2 trips planned this year.  Been there many times and have never really had any problems using maps.  But I had some questions and thought I'd post up for you experts!

What would be the best for my needs?  Do they have the Quebec trail system that is downloadable?  How accurate is it?  Easy to see during the day?  Easy to mount on an 850X?  Any pros or cons you guys can come up with?  Cost?  How do they work in the cold?

Thanks.  I'm going to start my own research but thought this would be a good start.

The info's a little dated but see page 8 from this link.....

You can probably get more details regarding powering a device etc on Dootalk's GPS forum (my example in the link above was a '14 800).  At the time I used an automotive GPS with QB trails from Trakmaps.  https://www.trakmaps.com/en/  I had no issues in below 0F temps with the screen.  And I thought the GPS I used was big enough to be functional while riding.

I found the Trakmaps maps to be very precise. I didn't expect it but I was looking at the GPS a lot while riding as it'll show upcoming turns (major and minor).  Amazing how much detail was provided.

Farmers are threatening to close trails through their land it is the same group as always in years past, the UPA. Basically is the "Union of Agricultural Producers" in english. They are upset about new taxes imposed by the Quebec Government on them. So this is there way of basically using there land to hold the govt hostage and us along with it. "They cut off their nose to spite their face" if you ask me. As closing trals would just be a big F-You to their own towns and neighbors. The ones who work in hotels, auberges, gas stations, restaurants and snowmobile dealerships etc, etc.

they however do not see it that way. So that is the way it is.

Right now I have read there will be no closure. They meet again next week. I highly doubt the government wants to lose all the money from tourism which they will if they don't satisfy farmers.

Farmers are smart this is a much better way to have them by the balls(the govt) in the middle of a great season. Then to threaten in fall when there is no snow yet.

Time for permanent trail agreements with the farmers they want something need to give something. Ridiculous we need to be going through this ever other few years.

Just curious how the QB Gov taxes the farmers? A higher real estate tax? Or some other tax?

Here's a time saver but requires a little math  (some may already do this) - our group is 6, we all ride roughly the same sled, eat about the same, and drink about the same. I'm the "Banker". ONE bill for everyone, and I pay for everything.  When the bank is out of money, everyone throws in $100, and on we go. Pull into the gas pump 2 by 2 on each side of the pump. Fill one, and while you're moving it out of the way be filling the next, and so on. Again, one pump (you can use 2 or 3 to speed things up), one bill, one guy cashing out and we're out of there. Lunch, the bar, the rooms, etc. it all works for us. Want to see an outfitter's eyes light up with joy - tell them one check for EVERYTHING - all the rooms, the bar tab, the gas, etc. 6 individual guys checking out of an outfitter trying to figure out who had 2 beers and who had 3 could take you an hour. It usually takes us 10 minutes. Watch 6 or 9 guys fill up and pay individually at the gas pump - you might be there a while. At the end of the trip we divvy up any money left in the bank. One year we had 5 1200's and 1 E Tec. I figured out the total miles, gas mileage, and the E Tec got a gas credit back from the bank. Anyway, over the years we've learned that it all works out in the end for us, and saves a ton of time.  You have to have a good group though .  If you can't do all 9 on one, at least make partners (roommates, or similar sleds, or something). Anytime you can cut down on the number of transactions, you'll be much better off. Good luck!

Good approach and prolly the only way to fly with that many peeps. More than 3-4 and I'll usually take a pass on the trip.....from experience. Too far of a drive to screw the pooch with unecessary shenanigans.
