Garmin InReach Mini set up for use on a Snowmobile
Munson replied to Munson's topic in Snowmobile parts and accessories
I'm glad that it will go to good use. I never had to use it in an emergency but it would literally be worth its weight in gold if it were ever needed. -

I got out of the sport and no longer have a use for this thing. Make me an offer. It's hard to believe that nobody on here is looking for a little piece of mind and additional safety margin when out in the middle of nowhere. -

Thanks for the plug. I am getting out of the sport otherwise I would keep it. Even if I only use it one week a year in Quebec. We've all had that experience where we are in trouble in the middle of nowhere and wondered what would happen if we needed help and couldn't call for it. That's what prompted me to get this thing. Never had to use it except to tell my wife what I was up to. But it made me feel better just to have it with me. -
Without a cell signal you can message 911, send and receive text messages and your family can track your movements from a computer at home. I bought it for a snowmobile trip in Quebec but it was also useful when my son would ride by himself on Tug Hill - we could track his movements. It requires an annual fee ($35??) and then a monthly fee during the riding season. I think we paid $15 a month for 3 months a year. There are different plans depending on your needs. The Garmin Inreach plus the three Ram mount components would cost about $400 plus tax if purchased new. I have a use for 2 of the 3 Ram components so if you dont want those I can lower the price and exclude them from the deal. https://www.garmin.com/en-US/p/592606

For the last 5-6 years mine has always been mounted to the glove box extension but I like the idea of having it closer - especially on trips where I know I will be relying on it, entering different destinations, switching between maps, etc. Thanks

Do you mind if I ask why you mount the gps that way, rather than on the glove box?

Yea, nicer than we need but relatively close to NY, on the trail and they had availability. I will report back.

Has anyone ridden out of Selenia Lodge In Amherst? We are thinking of staying there in 2 weeks. Thanks https://www.selenialodge.com/en/

Grassman and I took a trip to Le Cababon 2 weeks ago with the help of folks on this board. So I though I should share one of the highlights: Youtube

"Munson always looking for the best eats. I never worry about getting a good meal riding with him. " That's the difference between being Italian and being Irish!
-
I'll be riding with Grassman24. How's the food at Le Cabanon? Is there anyplace else locally to eat? Do sleds get stolen even out of the corral? Thanks for all the tips.

Braden take some pictures of La Cabanon for me. Considering making that home base for a few days the week of March 10. Munson (AKA Schreibdave). Have fun.

"I use the ATM to get the best rate" That never occurred to me. Has anyone else done that? Thanks Not a member of AAA. My bank has to order it and I will be back by the time they get it. Another bank in town has canadian $ but you have to be an account holder there. I'll check out the place in Cornwall. But the leading contender is an ATM in Shawinigan.

Driving to Shawinigan via 81/Thousand Island Bridge on Thursday morning. Is there a place to exchange currency at the border crossing? Any idea what their hours might be (hopefully crossing around 8am). Thanks
-
Yes, more reports please!

Keep the updates coming Jackstraw. Thinking about heading up March 8.

We are looking to drive straight north from Syracuse NY in a week or two for 3-4 days of riding. Given current conditions, how far north do we need to drive to find rideable snow? We stayed in Maniwaki two years ago but I understand we need to go further north than that. Would also appreciate any suggestions on 150 - 200 mile loops and back pack trip options. If I should post this in one of the sub forums please let me know which one. Thanks

Yup. Recognize your sleds. We enjoyed the sound of the two vipers running one morning. I think the guy with the beard may have compared notes with one of our guys one morning. -

We arrived on the 3rd and left on the 7th so we must have overlapped. I dont recognize your sleds. Here's a shot of ours. Three Renegades and one Indy Adventure. -

We've been back for about a week and wanted to give some input on our trip and a "thanks" for all the advice. We stayed in Maniwaki at Chateau Logue. Nice enough place. Unfortunately it was pretty empty so the restaurant and bar always felt deserted. Didnt have any problem with security on the trucks or trailers. Did use a cable to lock the sleds together at night though. Did an overnight backpack trip to Parent. Stayed at the Central Hotel. That was sort of a dump. But $50 for a room with 2 beds is hard to beat. Communal bathrooms in the hallway. Did about 750 miles in 3.5 days. Trails were 95% great. People were friendly and eager to help us foreigners. First day on the trail we ran into a group of guys from here in Central NY. A few days later we sat next to some guys from NY - one guy was from my town and his cousin and my son are classmates. Small world. We'll definitely do it again. I need to learn some elementary French because the language barrier was sometimes a drag. Never a real problem but it required some more work. Strange that on the drive north from NY we had to drive local streets through down town Ottawa. Kind of a challenge to navigate in the dark in rush hour traffic with the trailer. Next time I will try to avoid taking that route. -

Thank you for all the helpful responses. Does anyone have a recommendation for a source for gps trails that I can load onto my Garmin? -
