Three people were killed in a fiery crash when a van collided head-on with a fuel truck in Quebec's Gaspé region, not far from the boundary with New Brunswick, on Sunday afternoon.

The fuel truck did not explode, but the van was burned so badly police said it will take several days to identify the occupants, using dental records.

The collision near the small village of Pointe-à-la-Croix closed Highway 132 for hours. It's one of only two main routes to the Gaspé coast.

"People are very discouraged, I advised people to cross the bridge in Campbellton to take a hotel, because it might be all night," said Michèle Thibeau, who was serving frustrated drivers at a restaurant just west of the crash.

Drivers reported Monday the highway was reopened by 4 a.m.
