  1. Who is looking at the cost of the trail pass when contemplating where to go ride for holidays?   It's peanuts in the total cost of a trip.  I'm much more concerned with the quality of the product I will receive.  Will things be groomed and signed? What are the snow conditions like, etc.  Never ridden in NB, but if they are getting on par with Quebec like many say they are then they are worth looking at for a trip IMO.  The cost of accommodations and distance to trailer to a destination would have a much larger impact on your travel budget than the trail pass if money is a concern.

  2. Thanks for the explanation.  Makes sense.  I agree as snowmobiliers we have no problem paying for trails.  When asked to pay twice it gets a little tough to stomach though.  I take it the St Donat club is looking after maintenance on this 28 km stretch despite not being able to enforce FCMQ permits or to receive any of the funds the park collects?

it is open since the beginning of the season with the restrictions mentionned and you have to pay your fee of $8,60/day/person on internet before going or place your money in a box at the Park entrance. There are no people or cashier at the entrances but the trail is randomly patrol  by parks agents. You won't see it on iMotoneige or interactive fcmq map because it is not considered as a federate trail (don't ask me why!).

Personnally I had not ride it and won't,  even if i can go with my 4 stroke. For me it's unacceptable restrictions and a dangerous precedent to ask money for passing on a territory(park in this case). Reopening the whole park the way it was in the old years  with all the wide trail would have been something but reopening only the Caribou trail, one drag wide with a buch of restriction and asking money over the top: No thanks for me, but this is just my own opinion

As for St-Faustin connector, local snowmobile club announce this week that they finally just got all the autorizations from government, environment and they will begin the bidding process in the next week for the trail construction work

Is there a collection box at both the north and south ends? If there is no one there what proof do you have that you paid?

I have mixed feelings because of the shield, however I am optimistic that is now solved with the newest version.  Four big pluses with this helmet: huge visibility, very quiet, very lightwieght, and warm.

Was this for the Oxygen Helmet thread?

  5. We rode out of hotel signature this March.  It is a good setup and the free shuttle downtown is a bonus.  My wife loved the ice hotel (its north of town and you have to drive your own vehicle to it). The hotel is very snowmobilier friendly.  Only thing I'd say is go mid week.  The traffic in the area on the weekends is detrimental to a good holiday.  We left on a saturday morning headed for Saguenay.  There was lots of fresh grooming, but by 10 am everything along the north shore of the river (TQ 3 essentially) was trashed.  We met hundreds and hundreds of sleds.  We didn't find smooth trails until we swung north on TQ 83.  The scenery is great, was loads of snow and I do believe the grooming is very consistent, but the traffic was unreal.  I can honestly say I won't go back on a weekend to the Quebec City / Charlevoix area.  I'd start from St Raymond and try and stay further north.  That or drive right through to Saguenay or Tadoussac.

  6. Working to 300 km days or a little less.  I kinda liked the 83 option as we end up in Saguenay for two nights and it looks like the accomodation would be nicer than we might find in Tadoussac.  Is 83 big open trail that you can make good time on?  Access roads and utility corridors?  I've heard TQ 3 is going to be a slower ride to start day one unfortunately.

  7. Still pondering our final route for next weekends trip from Quebec City to the Saguenay / Mont Valin area.  Which is the better choice.  Run up 83 to Saguenay from the Malbaie area, or head onto Tadoussac and then come up 93 the next day.  Either way I will spend day 2 riding the Mont Valin area finishing in Saguenay again and day three is the return trip down TQ 23.

  8. West coast of nfld is awesome.  Definately find a local if you can to show you around the back country.  You don't want to miss the Lewis Hills and the run into Grose Morne up to the big fjord.  One of my most memorable sled trips.  Was there for a week in April 2008.  Just be aware the backcountry there is very hazardous.  Avalanche areas and there has been more than one sled over the years that was unintentionally driven off a 500' tall cliff.  On an overcast day you don't see the drop coming.  Have a great trip!!

  9. Well ran up 386 and back today from Swisha.  Absolutely awesome.  It hasn't been groomed in almost a week, but doesn't matter.  Only bumps was the odd snow drift.  Couple small trees down as well to navigate around.  I think I was one of 8 sleds that rode this trail today.  Great ride.  Very remote, but great fun.   Food was good at the Pouvoire.  Gas was expensive, but no real surprise considering where it is.  I highly recommend this ride to anyone considering it.  Endless logging roads for 160 plus km.
