I read about this in the new Snow Tech mag. It looks pretty interesting, cheaper than a satellite phone and could save your life in an emergency.

Interesting, but we usually end up using the satellite phone to change hotel reservations on the trail. Plus, phone rental fees are reasonable.

Doo you rent a phone right before each trip, or keep it for the season?

We usually just rent it for the week, since we only do 2-3 full week trips..we don't bother for weekend/day trips since they tend to be in moderately populated regions.

I'm sure there are several places on the net to rent them. I've never rented one, this year is my year to rent it, my buddies have rented it for previous years. Here's an example, we get the Iridium: http://www.satellitephonestore.com

Another good phone idea is to buy a calling card up there, i think there are a couple major players. It works at most places and is about 5 cents a minute, much cheaper than the cell [when it works] or the hotel. They are easy to find. Looks like they expire in 6 months, so don't buy too much time. We usually just share a card.

I was looking at the Spot device too. I wonder if they can automatically route your emergency to Airmedic. It does not apear you get to talk on the device just send a pre programmed message.
