Just had lunch in Plattsburgh yesterday at the Naked Turtle on the water of Lake Champlain at the town Marina. Was wondering why there where probably 200 sailboats still dry docked? All Canadian owned, they can’t get to them. That must really suck cause that is a lot of money sitting there unable to use! The season is short enough to begin with

I have a sail boat sitting out of the water at a marina in Ontario. I could have put it in the water but later than usual by about a month due to covid restrictions. Marinas like every thing else were shut down and travel to Ontario from Quebec was for awhile shut down as well right when everyone works on their boats and gets them ready for spring launch. Once I could get to my boat in June, I elected to keep it out of the water along with about 25 % of the people with boats stored there. Why?, Because it was going to be a shitty season, going up the St Lawrence to Gananoque, Kingston etc despite being Canadian and and the boat being Canadian we travel in and out of US waters by the nature of the water ways, it was unsure if the Canadian 1000 island parks that we visit would be open or fully functional as well as Municipalité marinas we frequent in our summer travels. Add to that the thought that there will be a second fall covid wave and we might not be able to get back to the boat for haul out should they shut everything down again and it was a no brainer to give the season a miss. Costs are kind of irrelevant, in the water or out. All the costs of boat ownership remains the same, insurance mortgage ( if the boat is not free and clear), etc are constant. Out of the water storage however is cheaper than seasonal dockage and spring launch/ fall haul out fees are saved by not launching so there is a slight incentive to skip this year.

I occasionally click onto the web cam of rue principle in St Donat and have yet to see anyone wearing a mask, just looks like business as usual , like covid is not an issue, I thought it was being taken much more seriously in Quebec than here in the states, but that does not appear to be so in St Donat.

We do take it seriously in QC, masks are mandatory in all indoor establishments or stores, taxi’s, buses, etc but not out side walking down a street unless the 6 ft distance rule can not be maintained. Maybe that is what you are seeing. Private gathering are limited to max 10 people inside or out and preferably from no more that 3 households. They still need to remain 6 ft apart or wear a mask.
We do have idiots who defy the rules but most comply and certainly when it comes to masks in stores I have not experienced anyone trying to get in without one or having a hissy fit tantrum because they are refused entry without one.

  3. I have been following this post with interest. What a great thought and gesture. For what it is worth here is my opinion. Tracking down individuals who are in financial dire straits due to covid could be tough and judging by the way the Canadian government has handled this with on going payments to just about everybody, I kind of think small establishments that cater to you guys on your trips up here are the way to payback your appreciation. Businesses are hurting and depending on the type and their past income government relief not only varies but some do not qualify. Not an easy thing to decide who or what establishments are in the most need, but maybe a first step is understanding what the government up here has been doing to help in establishing a direction for you to help. Here is a link to most of the programs that the Canadian government has been offering in terms of aid. https://www.canada.ca/en/department-finance/economic-response-plan.html

Yes, I think reality is kicking in, with 4 million plus cases and rising I think most by now realize it will take an absolute miracle to open that border, and with what I am seeing on the street, with the incredible number of people who just cannot seem to wear a mask or do the right thing, until there is a vaccine, that border will never open. People who are doing the right thing are at risk when surrounded by these people.I hope you guys have a great season and that most of the guys in the bush survive.I have not written the season off yet, but I know it is just wishful thinking, best of luck to our friends North of the border, I hope you can salvage the season for us, 21/22 is a long way away!!

We have the same problem up here with people refusing to wear masks which is now mandatory in all public places, but they are a small percentage. I just don’t get it, when they claim it is their personal right to choose. It is their personal right to choose to take their chances and drive without a seatbelt, ride a motorcycle without a helmet, jump out of a plane without a parachute, etc etc, all things that are common sense  no no’s but don’t really affect the health and safety of others. Somehow they can’t grasp that we are all on the same side fighting a war against an unseen enemy. If they go into a store with no mask for example, they are pretty much protected by all the ones who wear a mask but they are the ones putting others at risk who wear a mask. A vaccine would be great but curing selfishness would go a long ways to getting the virus under control as well.

  5. What a refreshing outlook on the situation  we all find ourselves in. I do imagine we will have a snowmobile season in QC despite the covid, but it is doubtful We will open our borders unless a lot changes. I guess I better start practicing my reporting skills, I have a long way to go to catch up to the level of some fellas on here.

When I was at the border on the last day , a couple of hours before it closed in late March, there were 6 cars going back to the States and going North into Canada, there were 4 lanes a hundred deep, mostly motor rv's  towing boats and small cars, and 5th wheel rigs. It really looked like they had so many people trying to beat the deadline they just could not check anyone. I was thinking while I waited and watched, what a huge problem this was going to be. It is still a problem here, all these large numbers of beach and bar goers and protesters spreading it around like Halloween candy . I have no idea how this is going to get under control with out a vaccine, on the weekend the beaches around Boston were absolutely packed , people on top of each other, and we all know that this is so dangerous, but some people just do what they want to do, playing the odds or just do not care. They just announced today that the Sturgis Harley rally  is on for early August, 7 to 800k expected to attend this annual party, what could possibly go wrong??

Yes and I’m betting most of those people coming back who were told to self quarantine didn’t. In fact many were coming back unexpectedly early and had left little food supplies behind in their homes, so instead of going directly home As they were told they went grocery shopping.
Really don’t know where it ends but it is scary to think the success of getting control and keeping a lid on this virus lies in the hands of those who don’t care or feel their individual rights are more important than conquering this.

Yes we want to go riding and half of Canada wants to go south for the winter, we both have useless pass ports at the moment!!

Well maybe we can trade, but please keep the snow birds down there, And don’t let them come back! That’s how we got in trouble with the virus Here in QC and Ont when they came back.

Very same story in Massachusetts, more than 50% of all the cases were in nursing homes, a real indicator of how many people had or has it right now, with zero systems and is passing it around. The old folks immune systems have nothing left to fight it, very sad, and no one could go to visit for months, even to say good bye.

Very sad. Two people I know lost their mums to this very situation a week apart in different senior residences.  As the already under staffed places lost more care givers when they tested positive, the army was finally called in Here in QC to care for the seniors.

8% death rate, of those tested, probably much lower if everyone gets a test, and these are numbers from a country that really is trying hard to do the right thing...you can easily see why the states have so many cases, people are not even trying...and in the big picture of reality, only a very small number have actually been tested. Percentage wise the death rate in the states is probably much lower than Canada, not that it matters....still have to fix this problem.

A large portion of those death rates in Ontario and Quebec comes from the senior nursing homes. The virus got into a number of them and the staffs was ill equipped to deal with it. Couple that with old age and underlying heath issues of the residents and it was devastating. Poor souls.

If you guys really have it down to 1 percent and can beat this thing, you will ride this winter. I do not think it is even remotely possible for us to get there, just Canadians riding this year, almost certain of that unless there is a very fast and reliable test with a vaccine, by November. Canada would have to be crazy to open the border any other way. It is starting to look like we should get the gas out of our sleds unless you plan on riding state side. There will be a lot of traffic and less trails and less grooming, and who knows if there will be good snow, you can almost always count on that in Canada...but not here. My black lab is going to be very happy with all the time we will spend in the woods this fall and winter. I will most likely sit this one out if the border stays closed, going to hurt, will be the 1st time since 1966, but the deer and pheasants are going to be in trouble!!

All I can say is be positive and Be responsible,  but the most important thing is be safe. 👍

When your BMW is not running you go to the mechanic, when your roof needs replacing you call a roofer, when you are worried about this virus, LISTEN TO THE DOCTORS, NEVER POLITICIANS!! If I was Canada I would wait this out a bit longer before starting to re-open, you do not want to do this twice.Keep your dog on a leash for 3 months then go out and unhook him and see if he runs crazy and wants to play, that is what is happening here and we are all going to pay for it.

Well one difference here in Canada From what I can see, our politicians for the most part are listening to the medical experts not contradicting / ignoring them. DR Arruda, Québec’s chief public health officer has said from the beginning on this reopening, We will pull back if the numbers start going the wrong way.

Just a question for the Canadian members. Do you get any data on deaths from this virus?  I feel we on the states side don't get true numbers. It seem here the more positive cases the happier our elected people are. My wife got tested a couple weeks ago and it came back positive. She had the virus in January. Now she was classified a new case in our county. Nothing is being said about her having it and never going to the doctor. Of course the doctor would said there is something going around, at least that's what I was told when I went to the doctor. So I'm thinking that the spike we are having is people are getting tested and the ones who had it months ago are listed as new cases. May be wrong maybe not. I don't trust our government officials especial in a election year,.

      Just my thoughts guys.

I do trust the Gov figures here, mainly because they have been very pro active in trying to control the curve and using those figures to prove the seriousness. We are further broken down by region,  Laurentides for example in another Gov website and also I can get numbers for individual towns/ villages in my area. Seems to me though all these figures are a bit muddled.
Total cases for any place is the total number of cases confirmed by testing since the start, then you have the deaths to subtract, then the recovered to get any idea of the current active cases.

Quebec's population is about 8.4M, they are down to under 100 new cases per day, starting to flatten the curve.

We are flattening the curve big time, we and Ontario were the worst of all the Provence’s soaring quickly, but that IMO was due to the timing of spring break and many headed state side and all the snow birds suddenly coming back as they were urged to do when the virus was just getting going. No one or not many paid any attention to the guide lines and did not self quarantine. At one point we were averaging about a 1000 new cases a day and now some days QC reports under 100.
that probably will change upward With things beginning to open up.

Will be interesting to see what policies ofsc and the fcmq put in place for permit sales for folks that come from out of province.  I planned to buy quebec passes this year, but comments like yours do make you question whether it's a good idea.  Would be an ever tougher thing to contemplate buying if you were stateside.  What does riding look like if you can't stop and sit down at a restaurant which is currently the state of things in most provinces with outdoor seating available only?

Actually my comment was a smart ass comment back to this red sled dude who has come on here and posted 4 times all negative comments. But yes it is actually true, if the US does not get their act together their will be little incentive for Canada to want to open the border to non commercial trade. As you probably know QC did close it’s border to Ontario in the beginning of this as well as shut down travel between certain regions in Quebec.
If a second wave starts happening I am of the opinion they will do it again. In Quebec restaurants and bars have just opened up But at 50% capacity for indoor seating. My son in law is a waiter at a very popular restaurant in Montreal, after 1 week one of his co- workers was at a bar that the manager there tested positive, so that bar got shut down and the co- worker is quarantined awaiting testing. If that test goes the wrong way the restaurant will be in some kind of damage control at the least. So you are right,  you can see how fragile the infrastructure that snowmobiles rely on May be. Will the trails open?, probably, will they be open to tourists, possibly not unless things change. I do know one thing as it stands now I will be less likely to want to stop to eat in a restaurant and bringing lunch to eat trail side gets old fast.
