looking for good trip plan

Hi all,

Looking to ride this up coming winter and looking for a good trip that would be good for 4-5 days of riding. Would most likely think about starting from somewhere like the Delta since it's safe to leave vehicles and trailers. Ideally looking to stay at different places each night instead of riding out different ways from the delta each day. Just not sure on which hotels are secure/safe to stay the night at and which people would prefer to avoid. Would absolutley love some great sightseeing along the way of course! I know how to use the interactive map but just not sure of the area like some of you may be. Obviously i know to plan around fuel and what not as well. (we never skip a gas station regardless of how far we've gone!!)

It may only be the end of July but i'm already getting excited for the upcoming season 🙂

How far you want to ride each day?

Have you ridden this area at all before? (places you already been and want to see others?)

Let’s start there. That will determine your options. Out and back to the start point.

you have some choices from there for sure.

4 of us have been riding in Quebec since 1996 and have stayed at a lot of places. Never had anything stolen. Don't worry too much about thefts. Most we have ever done is keep the sleds in compounds when available or cable lock the sleds together.

i dont think the distance is going to be too much of an issue. We have a pretty solid group that can ride. I have not ridden in the area before however have been riding for quite a long time in general. this will be our first backpacking trip though for sure. I am aware of chaining sleds up as a deterrent and what not as well but it's much easier if i come here and ask about solid places to stay (or even places to avoid). We are open to different options and by having a few we can all take a look and pick the best one that will work for us.

I would suggest starting at Quebec City at the Double Tree by Hilton. Shorter drive for you and can make a great 4-5 day loop from here. Beautiful ride from here up the #23 to either Saguenay or Lac St Jean.

Can give hotel suggestions if this starting point is of interest.

Yes Double Tree has a large lot, will be 20 -30 trucks/trailers park there, most for the week while people are on a saddlebag trip. About a 10 minute drive from the hotel to Old Quebec City. If any in your group haven’t seen Old Quebec City it would be a great spot to spend the evening of your arrival day.

Hotel Roquemont in St Raymond that Iceman suggested is also poplar spot for people starting a saddle bag trip.
We spend two weeks in this area last winter, one week with a group of guys and another with my wife.

This winter will likely do the following 5 day loop with another group of guys going counter clockwise.

Day 1: Start from #1, Double Tree, Quebec City or Roquemont, St Raymond to #4 Auberge Eva

Day 2: Auberge Eva riding around west end of Lac St Jean, across the top to #8 Otis Nature Center

Day 3: depart Otis ride through Mont Valin to #10 Hotel Pelchat via the Pelchat trial, #9

Day 4: depart hotel Pelchat, head west taking ferry across Saguenay river, head north up to #14 Delta or someplace that area

Day 5: back to the trucks

Iceman had a good trip report last winter riding around the Lac St Jean/ Saguenay area. He maybe able to post a link to it. Will give you some ideas of the various lodging options.

l really like staying at some of the outfitters and lodges when possible. Only problem is many of them aren’t so flexible for cancellations vs regular hotels. If travelling with 4 people or less can often wing it, get larger groups need to book ahead in many areas.

My wife and l spend two weeks last summer touring NH, Vermont and the Adirondacks on our Spyders. New Hampshire is a beautiful state. One of the best days of riding we ever had was big loop in NH, Mont. Washington was an interesting ride.

I'll offer a completely different second option;

Drive to St. George/Beauceville area (just above Jackman, Maine area) and save yourself hours of driving verses the Delta.

If you can arrive early enough to this area, on day 1 ride to Riviere du Loup and stay at the Universel or Levesque Hotels. Riding east, stay on the southern trails that are near the Maine border and then pop up to Riviere du Loup.

Day 2:   Ride southeast via St. Cyprien,  Squatek, into New Brunswick to Moose Valley and across to New Brunswick and back into Quebec to Amqui for the night.

Day 3:  Ride north to Rimuski and  then west and  stay another night in Riviere du Loup (using the trails near the St. Lawrence River).

Day 4: Head west  to Montmagny staying near the St. Lawrence, then drop south to St. George.

This route takes you by numerous club houses, first class hotels, sled dealers, historic downtown Riviere du Lou and its numerous bars and restaurants.

Each day is about 200 miles although I am not positive about mileage on day 2.

For attractions you will ride through the mountains with the windmills, ghost trees, the absolutely stunning Moose Valley, a large mountain to ride up below Montmagny,  the historic island out in the river off Riviere du loup and many more places others can suggest.

Fuse is giving some great advice.  Have stayed at Double Tree in Quebec and Roquemont in St Raymond many times.  Double Tree is hands down better.  More parking, rooms are way nicer.  Other option which I have done is stay in Montmagny at L'Oiseliere.  Very nice place and can do the Gaspe and hook down into NB if desired.

Try this route

http://fcmq.fcmqapi.ca/i?s=IwGmFZgZgNgTnAJhiA2gWhgBnAqY4B2Q8EcADizmCxEVzigF0xTVhg4AWLKPkHlHD5g5BOTCCU6LpWoh0NQnBiIFMQuWyscMGCwwdywQqNIdwvBVyjBEa9IUSauCxFEbSTUe6-cwKWhguOHJmNFQRLGQQcNp4kATaSLBolAgmJiA&r=2

Start and finish at the Delta.

Day 1 - 49th parallel trail.  Stay at Hotel Jardin

Day 2 - run TQ83 through Wemotaci.  Stay at Pouvoire Kanawata

Day 3 - Down 345 and head for St Raymond - Stay at Roquemont.  Another option is the St Alexis Pub

Day 4 - Back to the Delta.  TQ23 is phenominal.  Especially the section from L'Etape to Mont Apica.  Avoid the weekends for this leg if possible.

If you still have time I would argue TQ83 south of Saguenay is one of the nicest trails in the province.  Especially from where 383 meets it all the way down to TQ3.  A ride to La Malbaie and back is a great day.
