A major fire intervention is underway this Friday afternoon in Rivière-Ouelle. The authorities were called around 2:20 p.m.

An imposing plume of smoke is visible, due to a peat fire at Tourbières Lambert. The work is complicated by intense heat and strong winds.

“A fire is currently raging at Tourbières Lambert in Rivière-Ouelle and the strong winds disperse smoke throughout the territory of Kamouraska. The fire departments are currently working to contain the fire, "said the MRC Kamouraska Fire Department.

SOPFEU and its tanker planes were called in as reinforcements. "We received the alert," said Mélanie Morin of SOPFEU. "Staff are going on site, as well as tank planes".

Tourbières Lambert employees were mobilized and watered the roadside edges with water boilers to prevent the fire from spreading further if it were to gain ground. For the moment, we do not know how the blaze, which is heading towards St-Denis, started.

The Bas-Saint-Laurent Public Health Department recommends that residents of Rivière-Ouelle and surrounding municipalities who are bothered by smoke stay inside their home.

Smoke from the current peat bog fire can pose health risks. Forest fire smoke is a complex mixture of gases and particles. The smoke plume contains irritants that can worsen or cause symptoms in fragile or vulnerable people. The main symptoms associated with short-term distant source exposure to forest fire smoke are primarily of an irritant nature (respiratory tract and eye irritation, wheezing, difficulty breathing). People who are more sensitive to smoke are those with respiratory problems (asthma, bronchitis) and heart problems (angina).
