Anyone done it?

Expensive?

Hard?

Thinking of buying a 2012 Rental, it may still have the Full warranty.

Thanks

GutZ

In Canada when buying an American vehicule we have to fill out a RIV report (Registered Import Vehicule) $220.00 for the report and then get the vehicule inspected (cost included in the report) at an affiliated establishment that is recognized by the RIV report, then pay the taxes and your ready to register at the dmv. Call the border they will steer you in the right direction.

I've purchased sea-doos, going the other way, though.

I suggest you contact an "Import Specialist". I believe one can be located at the Champlain, NY facility. I'd call there in advance.

Sometimes, the inspectors are not used to such questions because they are worried about money, citizenship and terrorists day in and day out.

I think this is the best way to get proper information and document your conversation and who with...because you may need to show the regular inspectors at the border what's what.

Hi Gutz,

We have purchased new sleds in Quebec over the years, most recently in 2011. We purchased the sleds for our own use and not as a business buying and selling sleds. This makes a difference.

The dealer that you are buying it from will give you the bill of sale. Check the bill of sale against the sled for typos. This you present to the U.S. Customs. There is one form that we would fill out at Customs with the sled info, cost of the sled and our info. Customs checks the VIN on the sled. We never had to pay anything. We always crossed the border in VT on 91.

The warranty is another issue. The sled will probably be warrantied for whatever it had when it was new, one year complete and maybe 2nd year on the motor. You will NOT be able to purchase an extended warranty.

PM me if you want any info.

I've done it twice. The dealer filled out all the paperwork needed for customs and warranty transfer from Canadian to US. Then I loaded the sleds in my enclosed trailer

and said have a nice day as I crossed the border. Never declared the sleds. Yes I took a chance but I was younger then! A friend of mine use to buy Sea Doos when the rate

was 1.40 to 1 and re-sell them here all the time. Never had a problem at the border. Again, that was a long time ago.

Also, if you are already not on top of this, make sure the dealer knows you are taking it (them) out of the country. For "export". This should get you out of paying the GST/PST taxes. And, because of NAFTA, if the sled is made in North America there is no duty or other taxes to bring 'er home.

This is dated info, so please check with the dealer, the dealer close to the border suggested by somebody else and that Import Specialist I mentioned earlier.

PS. When I bought my two Sea Doos, the exchage was $1.62CN for each US dollar! Those were the days!

I have purchased 4 sleds in Canada but it has been quite a few years as the exchange is not favorable anymore. I HAD to pay the GST/PST tax every time and then re-apply for it after bringing it home and sending in the paperwork showing that I imported it into the US. The GST & PST were two seperate places and you have to wait 4-6 weeks to get a check from them. No import fee bringing a sled into the US (at least not back then) and they just verify your purchase receipts and fill out a quick form and give it to you.

Happy Trails Gutz !!!
