Trail Conditions

Hi everyone,

Sandi and I at the Sagueneenne for our annual post Christmas trip.

We rode yesterday out of the hotel to Scoobyraid. South of the river is rough. It is passable but not much has been groomed on the south side. We crossed the 2 dams and met 4 other riders. One was from the area and said that the quad trail that goes off to the right towards 93 and St Honore is supposed to be for snowmbiles this year. I didn't see any signs saying that but it is early. They went that way and so did we. A little tough to follow, without signage, but we made our way to 93 and turned left to go back to 367 north. At the 367 junction with 93 in the big field, we noticed that 367 had been groomed recently. Yea!

367 was groomed all the way until we hit the junction in Lamarche. We crossed the road and followed the trail for about a mile. This wasn't groomed and we came across yellow banner indicating trail closed. We wandered around for a while, even asked directions from a couple of locals. We were given directions to the "new trail". Very rough with sticks and stumps. Luckily it had snowed a little the night before so we were able to take the road to Scoobyraid.

At Scoobyraid, Marie told us that a new land owner won't give permission so the trail has been re-routed. Hopefully with some snow and grooming it will be OK.

On the ride back, some of the trails were good and some not so good.

Last night it snowed a little more. It is very windy today. We rode over to the Holiday Inn. It still has the Holiday Inn name on it. We had thought it was going to be called the Delta this year. The name on the building hasn't been changed yet.

We rode 83 west and then turned right onto the local trail to 383. The drifts were pretty bad. After getting stuck a couple of times, we decided to turn around and head back. We got back to the HI and then headed up 383 to the 2 dams. We then took 367 back to the Sagueneenne. A lot of snow drifts. Not impossible but tough.

It is around 0°F. The snow is setting up. Hopefully the groomers will be out soon.

We heard that there is enough snow on Mount Valin but it was very busy up there on Monday. We have stayed away from there so far. We will probably go up there later this week.

In conclusion; there is snow, you can ride out of the hotels but it is early season conditions.

A little cool this morning, -22̊C. The wind has died down.

We rode out of the hotel on 367, across the 2 dams in Shipshaw up to 93. Some of it had been groomed. When we got to 93, that had been groomed last night, both directions. We decided to head west to St Nazaire. Perfect trail. It looked almost as good as mid January. We then headed north on the local trail, past Relais des Lacs and continued north to 367 in the blueberry fields. Then we went up to Scoobyraid on 367. Had a good lunch. We met Paul and Lou from Maine while we were there. They rode back with us on the same trails to St Ambroise where we split.

The trails are getting better. The clubs are grooming. North of the river is much better than south even though it is still rideable south but some sticks and a little snirt.

PS to Bill: The snowflakes are calling your name.

Yesterday we decided to try Mount Valin. I know the weekend is not when we should go there but we haven’t been yet so we thought we would give it a try early Saturday.

83 out of the hotel was groomed again. Far from perfect because of low snow but the club is trying. 367 had not been groomed and it is getting bad. After we crossed the dams we took the right onto the "quad" trail that is supposed to be a snowmobile this year? (I don’t know for sure.) This was just groomed. A mile in, 2 sleds passed us coming from the other direction. This is a very good sign. A little further in after a water tower and dam, there is a snowmobile trail sign pointing straight ahead. The groomer had turned left staying on the quad trail. The quad trail is where the sleds had come out of too. We tried to go in the direction of the snowmobile sign but too many different tracks and no defined trail. We spun around and stayed on the quad trail. This brought us out on trial 93. We came out in the same spot that we did on Tuesday.

93 was groomed last night. Yea! On to St Honore and Mount Valin. After the airport there has been a change in 93. The old trail turned left and went up a road, thru a campground and then right into the woods. The new 93 does not turn left. It continues straight on the road. The trail runs the road for 1 mile. After the mile, there are 2 red stakes on the left and there is a new trial cut in the woods. Follow this for 1½ miles and the trail comes to an intersection. This is where the trail joins the old 93. Turn right to go to Mount Valin. One note: There are signs pointing straight ahead at this new intersection down the old trail but we didn’t take it. I don’t know where it goes.

93 was a little rough around Valinouet but not bad. The rest of 93 was good. Plenty of snow. We had lunch at La Chapelle and headed back.

93 was getting a little rougher so we took the connector over to Bras Louis. This was groomed recently along with Bras Louis. Very nice ride back to Valinouet. We stayed on 93 to St Ambroise and took 367 back to Chicoutimi. It was getting dark and we didn’t want to take the quad trail.

367 from St Ambroise to the 2 dams was horrible. This was the worst 10 miles of trail that we have been on in a long, long time. I don’t think it had been groomed this year. After the dams 367 was a little better but not by much. The clubs may be concentrating on the trans-Quebec trails and leaving the local trails until there is more snow.

Time to go out for another ride.

Happy New Year to all. We wish everyone a great year of sledding.

Looks like a nicely groomed start to the Pelchat trail. TQ3 west to Sacre-Couer didn't look too good...

Are they grooming past Lac des Couer yet?

As of 12/30 there was no grooming past Lac des Coeurs ... about 20 miles of wind blown bumpy single track to the C 900 junction , then it gets a little better the last 10 to the Lac Brumes junction.

Today we decided to stay in the Jonquiere area. We didn’t want to torture ourselves with 367 north.

Well, we tortured ourselves with 83 and 383. 83 was by far the worst of the two. Not much snow, some snirt and sticks still showing in the trails. 383 was a little better but far from great.

Other riders have written that south of here is good. We haven’t been able to get there.

Tomorrow may be a day with the trailer.

Hoping for some more snow and grooming, leaving Friday after work from Ohio . . . . . 17hours in the truck :(! Staying at the Auberge Carcajou for week:)!!

Think Snow

With the area forcast you will be in fine shape ... lots of cold weather and there is plenty of snow in that part of Quebec.
