In the vast majority of Canada you only own the top 6” of ground. Anything below that is mineral rights which are owned by the crown, or can be owned privately (typically by resource companies). People in areas with active resource extraction occurring (mines, oil and gas, etc.) typically understand this and the rest of the country is not as informed. I’m sure there won’t be 100% consensus, but I can see the town being on board. If the mines going to fund construction of new homes/ a new town it could be a win win for all involved. Get a more than fair offer for your home and the promise of good paying jobs. There will be some disagreements I’m sure. But a successful mine can bring a lot of benefits to a small rural area if the ore is good enough and it’s built properly to be economic and to protect the environment. The mine closures in Murdochville will be young enough that people in town will still remember what things were like when it was running full tilt. Will be an interesting thing to watch. Not unprecedented, but not common to see a town moved in recent history.
