Started Sunday morning in Shawinigan (more snow than I’ve ever seen there) and headed out the 3 towards QC. Things were good for the first 50 miles or so ( actually mint). Around QC and all the way up to Baie St Paul was like riding Tug Hill in NY. I swear EVERYONE that had a running sled in QC was out on the trails today. It was a beautiful blue sky day ( the whole week has been like that) so we made the best of it. Getting beat up your first day and riding 200+ kinda sucks but what they hey..... stayed at Hotel Baie St. Paul for the night. Headed up to Forrestville on Monday and the trails got much better. Had a moose encounter about 30 miles before the hotel but that’s a whole other story. The 3 way before and way after tadoussac was groomed to perfection which was nice. We left Forrestville yesterday morning and headed to Baie Comeau for lunch then headed out to Godbout. What a trail. Back tracked to BC for the night. After much fanfare with the ferry problems this year we finally has positive confirmation of a 2:30 pm departure to Matane. Woke up this am and ran solo (buddies decided to relax)on the local trail that runs 42 miles north of Baie-Comeau and dead ends as groomer update showed last night. What a SPECTACULAR run and trail. Lots of 60;70 & 80 MPH sweepers. My new all time favorite!!!!!
Had a beautiful ferry run over and with the weather being so nice we got lots of money shot pictures and met lots of cool people. Working our way down to QC and back to Shawini on Saturday. Havnt been to the north shore in quite a few years and it was sweet to see and run it all again. Here is a pic at 1:30 today sitting on top of the hill overlooking the Baie-Comeau ferry terminal.

Another nice looking morning.  93 was groomed last night from St Honore to La Chapelle.  Lets take that.  93 is usually pretty beat but being a Tuesday it should stay good.
Across the two bridges and right on 134 to 93.  134 was groomed too.  93 to St Honore is perfect.  Up the mountain we go.  There is a fluff to the snow up here.  Down below the snow is more sugar snow.  Even around Valinuet 93 is fine.  This is just a few miles past the ski area.  The blue Canadian sky is gorgeous!

    Just keep on rolling Sandi.
We pull into La Chapelle.  More sleds here than at Mt Apica.  It looks like all Quebec plates.  We go inside for lunch.  I think this is under new ownership this year.  The interior has been changed.  There is a bar where the kitchen was.  The kitchen is to the right.  The old seating area is the same.

Pea soup, hot dog and a cheeseburger will do.  The pea soup must be homemade.  There is some onion and bay leaves in it besides the peas and ham.  Very tasty.  This could be a meal on its own.
Early in the year there are 3 or 4 steps coming out of that entrance.  Now the snow is up to the entrance.  Hi Sandi.

After lunch we run back down 93.  Bras Louis wasn't groomed so lets stay on 93.  We wind our way down the mountain.  It is getting overcast this afternoon ahead of the storm that is coming in overnight.  At the 328 intersection it looks good to the right.  This was groomed last night too.  Sandi turns right and off we go.  Nice riding here.  Just before the 134 junction there are many signs saying permission fragile, stay on the trail.  I remember someone posting a facebook clip about this landowner being very upset.  Sleds are not staying on the trail and running thru his property.  We behave.
Turn left on 134 and run back to the Delta like we did the other day.
Another nice ride today, very little traffic.  Tomorrow we will wait and see how much snow we get.  It will make the conditions better than they are now even though they are already great.

We'd been watching (obsessing) over the weather and believed the heavy snow band was passing across the south, so we decided to come up to Kanawata from Shawini yesterday over the park thru Mattawin & Repo and the new MINT go-around that passes Chateau Vert. Definitely no need to take the sanded road and miss such a great ride.
Three of us are leaving Kanawata this morning, 60mi to top gas at Wemo, 60 more to top @ 22, then 60 more to Odanak. That's our story.
Beside! Mario here says: "Snowmobiles... are for snow!"

Nah let’s hit the Petit Train du Nord. Take an early lunch at the resto bar Lac Saguay good choice out of there before 12:30 keep trucking. Gas at the Petro T in Riviere Rouge right on the 63 then over to Macaza man the nuts are out now! They think they are on a one way trail! The communicators help this, Me then the two girls then the big guy, hey big guy last guy in line thinks he owns the trail ok no problem will set him straight lol. Get close to St. Michel getting crazy let’s take it slow and get back to the truck. Overall trails not bad little beat between SMDS and Le Cabanon and some icy corners but hey it’s Saturday. Day 6- Leave Val-D’Or to Louvencourt for breakfast don’t have that kind of time to do the Forestel. Have reservations at Le Classic couldn’t get anything for Saturday anywhere near Rebaska or the outfitters in that area everyone booked solid Saturday gonna be crazy keep right gang! Head down 386 trail to the Reservation trail still exciting with the hills and the way the trail leans to the ditch. Gas at the Reserve and head South trail in pretty good shape the lower half we are running along the road because it’s plowed. In to the Verendrye lodge grab a late lunch and make tracks for Domaine. Trail needs grooming not rough but narrowing up and there is a water hole 25 miles before Domaine on 63. Gas at Domaine and on to Lytton to the Classic. Groomed from the Domaine to LeClassic thankfully

So true, pretty sure Iceman is writing in his head while riding, makes for a flowing story in the end, and not easy writing on an ipad either.
Not many pictures Sunday, just a couple in the morning light at Windigo, and the 900 Ace trip odometer once back on the trailer after 8 trail days. Nice ratio of 3.6 sled miles per trailering mile to/from NH. Anything over 2:1 is fantastic in my book!
Great crew, no BS!  Gas, pee, ride, eat, snore, repeat.  Pleasure and honor to ride with Iceman, Snohorse and Kwik Nick. Glad we recalculated back to Windigo for wing and smoked meat night, best in the province, and nicest hosts possible.
Carman, sorry no Doo oil reports, maybe just carry a couple quarts in reserve, and resupply ahead when you see it. Personally i would carry much more and be done with the concern. Dual jerry can setup worked great for Snohorse and Kwik Nick.
    Until next trip, Moose out

A beautiful morning it is and the groomer map looks great.  We can pick any loop and be on mostly groomed trails.  Sandi, lets head out 83 towards Alma and see where we end up.
We stop at the Ultramar first because we didn't tank up last week when we finished.  Off we go on 83 west.  Very nice.  The base is solid and there is an 1" of sugar snow on top.  The freezing rain a couple of days ago took away all the powder and left a sugar snow coating.  As long as we have snow for cooling and slides, I'm good.  We get to Kenogami and I guess it has been cold because the groomer has made a pass across the lake.  Follow the stakes and we turn right on 383 to Relais Grenouille.  No need to stop here.  The trail is too good.  Scooting along in the woods and thru the fields as we approach St Bruno.
We turn right on local 563.  We pass the Cat dealer and the trail is great.  Sunday morning and very few sleds out.  There aren't even any cars at the road crossings.  Amazing that it is so quiet.  We turn left on 561 and run along side the little airport.  We pass DRC Skidoo.  Of course no one here on Sunday.  At the junction with 23 we head north towards Alma.  Everything is so good.  The road is bare and the trail has some brown mixed in the snow from the road.  Not a problem.  Keep on riding Sandi.  A little oncoming traffic in Alma.  We loop under the auto bridge and get up on top and cross the river.  At the junction with 93 I check the time.  It is 11:00 AM.  Turn right Sandi and we will get to Relais des Lacs for lunch.  Down 93 and left on 554.
We get to Relais des Lacs and a few sleds here.  A group of four VTTs just leaving.  In we go and that guy looks familiar.  Wouldn't you know.  Its Pat & Gary (SnowmoGary), Tracy & John (Schooter).  Didn't we just have breakfast with you guys?  Time for a nice relaxing lunch with friends.

That poster in the background wasn't intentional.  I don't want to upset the other sleds.
After lunch the six of us take 328 east.  Sandi and I jump in the lead and at 367 we turn left and head north.  The others turn right on 367 and head towards St Ambroise.  A few miles up the trail and we turn right on 328.  Thru the big fields we go.  Like I've been saying all season, these trails are great.  Over the little river on the steel snowmobile bridge to 134.  Boy that looks good.  Lets go.

You can't see my plate but you can see Sandi's CT #2.
134 is so nice after a grooming.  It can get drifted in badly but the freezing rain has put the kibosh on the powder.  Go Sandi go.  Zip a dee do dah zip a dee day oh my my what a wonderful day.  For those of you that are as old as us.
We get to the lookout that is just a mile or so before the bridges and there are four sleds pulled over taking in the scenery.  Hey.  Wait up Sandi.  That is Pat & Gary, Tracy & John.

A nice view of the river and Saguenay from the lookout.
They took the short way from the south and we went the northern route of 134.  A little conversation and back on the sleds we go.  Down to the two bridges and left on 367.  Another left on 83 and before you know it we are at Le Cage in Chicoutimi.  It is a good time for a break.  We have a seat and relax.  Not too long and we are on the last leg back to the Delta.
83 is good.  We behave in the 20 kmh zone.  We don't want to upset anyone especially when there are radar signs posted.  We fill up the sleds at the Ultramar and we are back at the Delta.  What a nice ride with good friends.  Thanks.

snowfarmer reacted to towing in Joliette/Grand-Mere/Riviere Mattawin/St-Zenon/Joliette big loop photo ride-report 9february2019
With the beautiful sun forecasted and the fast trail conditions, we chose to do one of our classics: The Joliette/Mattawin River big loop

We were a little uncertain after Friday's rain on whether the trails would be icy or not so on Saturday morning we took a look at the interactive map to see the latest grooming and the majority of the trails had been done during the night so we went for the big loop

It is a ride that we make every year (once in each direction!) And that we particularly appreciate for its fast and rolling trails for being so south. The ride gave us 287 miles which when we have good conditions can be done quite easily in the same day. Having no riding partner we did it quite intensive without taking many breaks: We left home at 9:00 in the morning and came back home for supper at 7:00pm

So it's under a beautiful sun and -12C  that we start from home by sled on Saturday morning. The trail was very hard so I dropped the 2 scratchers from the start

It was a stunning sunny day but the wind was very strong. We just rode a bit in the field with the wind sideways and a good draft had made its way in the face of my sweetheart making her a cold spot just between the two eyes and she was feeling like she had just eaten a half-pot of ice cream too fast!!! I took out a sticky hot-pad kit and tinkered her a solution ... not very cute but effective!

Top notch riding apart from the side wind that wants to throw us down the Yam from time to time. My sweethearth no longer complains of the cold, not sure if her brain unfroze... or completely froze!

The more we rode on the #3 to the east and the more new snow we saw after the rain that turned to blowing snow

East of Ste-Ursule, I switched on local trails between #3 and #63 to keep a more direct route. Perfect trail conditions

We did a pit stop in St-Étienne to refuel and then continue to the east. Here crossing la Gabelle dam reservoir ...

On the way up on the other side of the river, some snowmobilers in the group in front of us had been trapped on an ice strip in the hill. I really love my Iceripper track, had not even free spinned

And we go back on the St-Maurice in Grand-Mère

The short stretch up to the junction with the #23 was pretty bumpy. Next was better but being two-up on the Yam, it been up to the height of Grandes Piles before I could open the throttle comfortably

The St-Maurice river scenery is always as beautiful ...

We then ride to get the #360

And we arrived for lunch at Marineau in Rivière Mattawin around 1:00 pm with about 130miles on the dreammeter

Alot people there but as always a good nice and fast service

Barely an hour later we left, all 3 full (Kristine, the Yammy and me) on # 360 in St-Zénon direction. Just after the bridge the trail connection has changed place  and the first portion is on a new, more direct and less twisty path. I like it much better for sure.

    The classic Mattawin River view

The #360 was like a carpet, beautiful and fast.

We took a break at the summer rest area 440

It's a picnic area, if you want to use the table plan to bring a shovel!

Then back for a lazy-boy ride on the beautiful #360

I chose to cross the river on the dam instead of the bridge, like in old time!

The reservoir level is already considerably lowered ...

The #345 was nice and fast too. As we expected we met a dozer who was starting his run from Cabanon

A last fuel-up for the venture at the l'auberge le Cabanon

The #23 south was as good, even in front of the dozer that we passed

The only less good section that was bumpy was few miles each side of Réal Massé where #23 and #350 share the same trail, then it was ok and once in the St- Gabriel trails even better. We also crossed their dozer who was leaving for his run too

We finally came back for supper at home at 7:00 pm with 287 miles on the dreammeter. The trails near home had enough loose snow with the day's traffic to ride easily without scratchers.
Once again the big tour did not disappoint us. Even with some rain last week, the trail network is still fully operational and nice: the best of the season is now! where ever you want to ride, do it now.. time flies really fast!!

You can always keep an eye here for trail conditions and more: https://www.snowmobilecountry.ca/en/conditions/
    Have fun and ride safe!

Friday Feb 8, 2019 @ 8am, 40F, a little heavier then a "soft rain" is falling @ camp in Pittsburg NH. What is one to do? Hhhmmm? Day one of the Grand Prix Ski-Doo de Valcourt located in Valcourt is starting. Phone the venue & am told the rain has ceased, & blue skies are overhead with snow in the forecast for later afternoon. Google says Valcourt is shy of a two hour journey. Passports in hand & off we go.
$20 US + - entry fee allows us into a heated suite for the entire day. A fantastic day was spent watching competitive races involving snowmobiles, rubber tired ATV's  ,& motorcycles both track & rubber tire.
It was my first time attending and will definitely return. If you have not yet experienced it I suggest you do if you enjoy the entertainment described. Racing occurs on both a mogul infield allowing heart stopping air shows or on the oval track that fosters wicked speed. There is rarely down time between races. When they are racing on the infield the crew is prepping the oval track & conversely.  Race after race, after race. Exciting !
For those reading this posting in real time the show runs today - Saturday 2/9 & Sunday 2/10. A description of the venue can be reviewed @ www.grandprixvalcourt.com. Google will translate  it for you.
No regrets here. Fantastic day full of entertainment both on the track and in the vendors tent.
Children in tow?  Didn't appear to be an issue as there were young & old in attendance.  Additionally on site is a family park offering in part  tobogganing , bouncy castles etc albeit we didn't venture over to it.
Additionally they have a limited assortment of food vendors on site & a heated bathrooms.
    Stay safe.

Woke to ice pellets hitting the motel window in Chapais. Outside it had clearly snowed 3-4” and then a mix of freezing rain and sleet. Big crust on sled covers. Had breakfast and wind kicked up big and now big snow squalls. This is gonna be fun. Up and out early today, yeah right, just kidding. Left at 10:15. Excellent. Wind is howling and there is a good crust on the trail. Flying up in chunks as I head down 93. Few tracks headed west then at Chibougamau trail there are 3 sled tracks headed toward saw mill. Snow tornadoes here and there making visibility not the best. Onward. We top off at Petro Canada right next to trail 93. Quick 20 miles done. Off we go following 3 tracks south. Big wind gusts kicking up lots of snow. All the big snowballs in the trees are falling left and right. Not easy but we get along. Branches and tree tops litter the trail. With yesterday’s tree incident fresh on my mind I a, hesitating a bit to push hard. So far so good we cruise down to the old Relais du Nord and here are the 3 sleds in Front of us taking a break. We pass on by now fresh trail no tracks to follow, really need to read the trail now, with wind fresh snow branches it takes alot of concentration. I got a good crew with me like always so I aint worry bout a thing. Maybe 40 km from sawmill 2 groups headed up. 6 sleds total. We got new tracks to follow now. Makes it a bit easier for sure. Into sawmill at 1pm great time to here. Now a problem, we wait at pump a few minutes, this place looks desserted. Old cafeteria boarded up no one around. Finally Snohorse heads off to search for someone anyone. Finally he calls and says found the guy he is coming to pump the gas. 3$ a liter here boys. All you cheap guys bring your own or prepare to pay up. We lost almost 35 minutes here waiting on gas. Out of Sawmill and down 93 this side we make some time up on first 20km then the wind and whiteouts slow things a bit. We press on. Now we are seeing more trees down lots more. Luckily so far all of them we can get over or around. Closer to end we come across a big one down however the group headed up has cut a bunch of branches so you can limbo under it. We arrive at intersection of 93 and Local orange to Restaurant du Chef. It’s 3pm. Great run awesome time. Even with 35 minutes lost at sawmill. Original plan was to go to St Felicien but it’s too early for that. So we go to get gas at restaurant du chef. Not far up orange trail we got a giant tree blocking whole trail. Time to put the freeride to work. He packs a trail around top of tree through bush. It’s deep here man. I am hesitant to put the Apex off the trail even with it packed. It works out. We get by and go for the gas. After tanking up we decide it’s Dolbeau tonight. We call an audible. Orange trail back to 93. All great less new snow here they obviously had more freezing rain but trails are great. 93 to 373 it’s not where I remember it and where it shows on my gps. Thanks for the intel on that, surely someone has been by here this year, yet no report on new location of trail 373.  373 beautiful and back to 93 and into Auberge Dilligence. No restaurant only for breakfast. Too bad it’s surely been getting quieter here, gonna miss this place.
Great day in challenging conditions, fun was had by all. Great trails. Saw 9 other sleds all day.

Heading to Duparquette to warm up and get breakfast, no deal both restaurants closed. Continue on to Rouyon Noranda gas up and get some breakfast, trails not too bad so far just some loose snow on top. Take the local cutoff to 83 heading east all groomed up until about 1/2 way to Preissac then gets a little rough and in need of grooming. From there take the local to the Manior des Rapides gas up and take a break, good food nice spot. Continue on the local to 307 for just a short section then back on the local to LaMotte and through to 309. This section of local trail was pretty rough back on the 309 all good again. Took the 309 into Val-D’Or for the night at the Forestel. Been here before great place to stay but the dinner takes way too long call St. Hubert lol

Today was frigid but mostly clear skies. Through the tunnels, onto the bypass trails and made my way to Trail #5.  Club Hiboux for coffee and then dropped down to #35 and headed east.  All trails are hard, flat and smooth, up to an inch of snow had fallen in most places after yesterday's freezing rain. I had a good appetite and was looking forward to a return trip to Rockford Resto and Bar.  Back around to #5 and a few miles back up the bypass trail.  Special today: lasagne with a small salad, french fries, soup, and apple pie with ice cream. Please add a cup of coffee. Arrived at 1:00 and place is quite busy. The lasagne was spectacular, the apple pie better than most homemade. The bill, $10.60. Two days ago the hot chicken dinner was $8.00. I wonder how far from the hotel by truck this place is, would make a nice place to have dinner at night that doesn't break the budget. Back to #5 east and onto 561 to repeat yesterdays ride. About 25 miles across before it comes back out to #5 again, probably doesn't save any time or miles, but a quiet, little used piece of heaven that is smooth, a nice mix of fields, power lines and lots of miles of nice woods. Saw a couple dozen deer. Trail is poorly marked, some intersections not marked. Believe I just kept bearing right. Lots of traffic on #5 going west this morning, all other trails pretty quiet. Met one groomer out doing his job, another stuck mired in a ditch. Also saw part of birds or feathers hanging from a small tree along a trail. Tribal or trapping?

    Travelling up north
Jim Jamison and his wife, Melissa, are incredibly friendly people who love to go on epic snowmobiling trips

Every year, Jim and Melissa Jamison travel from their home in Pennsylvania to Canada to snowmobile for weeks on end.Photo courtesy of Jim and Melissa Jamison Jim and Melissa Jamison live in Perkiomenville, Pennsylvania, and they have been snowmobiling together for a very long time. In 1963, their favourite place to sled was the Poconos in northeastern Pennsylvania—a mountainous region that is popular for its recreational offerings.
The couple purchased a home there and continued to visit the area each winter for great sledding, but they soon moved on to the Adirondack Mountains in the northeastern part of New York. They bought a home there as well and enjoyed great snow conditions for more than 20 years. Adventurous spirits like to move on, however, and the Jamisons have moved on to Canada. Thirty-one years later, the Jamisons haven’t strayed. They come up to Canada each winter to snowmobile.
The couple usually stay in the eastern provinces of Canada, but they have been as far west as Manitoba and have ridden through Ontario numerous times. Eighteen years ago, Jim was asked to look after a few snowmobilers who wanted to ride to Canada, as he had more experience with the region. He agreed and everyone loved it. Soon after, Jim discovered that there was a market for American snowmobilers travelling up into Canada, and Jamison Canadian Snow Excursions was born. In the earlier years, Jim took groups of people on tours to Labrador—a trip that usually took three weeks if they didn’t get stuck in a blizzard. Typically, they put about 5,000 kilometres on each sled. These excursions catered to those who wanted to see the spectacular backcountry of Canada’s eastern provinces, including Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labra-dor—Jim’s personal all-time favourite place to sled.
“It is spectacular,” he said. “Of all the snowmobile tours and places that I’ve been, (Labrador) is absolutely (the most) astounding. It is nature’s beauty at its best and it has awesome country.”
    The couple that sleds together
More recently, Jim has taken a step back from his tour groups and goes on only three work trips per year. A tour with his company includes everything from lodging and meals to maps and destinations—all you need is a sled. A typical trip would take sledders through Quebec and New Brunswick, and would last for one week.
One of Jim’s reasons for going on fewer work trips is that he wants to concentrate on travelling more with his wife.
“Every year we do trips together,” said Jim. “We take one week after Christmas and one week after Thanksgiving. Then, when I am done with my tours, my wife comes up for three weeks with me at the end of the season—next year is Quebec . . . and the Abitibi Canyon in Ontario.”

Kit Kat really needs to bring the great flavors to the states, I love the 70% dark, but these new Tiramisu are even better, and the espresso are great too!  Will be hunting down some bulk packs on my drive south.
