SnomoGary reacted to towing in Taureau reservoir loop/ Mastigouche reserve photo ride report 13april2019
With the new snow fallen during this last week, we went for another last ride with our friend Luc yesterday, April 13, 2019 in Lanaudière

On this exceptionally snowy season the trails of northern Lanaudière were still surprisingly good,  here on #23 trail south of Cabanon

The temperature was very mild since a few days, no freezing during the night so we got very soft trail. Here passing at Cabanon in the morning

We left in dam direction. The whole reservoir loop had been groomed during the week!

The conditions were nice for an April 13th but very good from the dam trail junction(on the # 345) and for all the reservoir loop up to St-Michel des Saints

It's not visible on the pictures but it was so windy there that I had hard time to stay still the time of the pic, I almost went with the wind!

The #360 around the reservoir  was candy to ride, just superb. We did very good tempo on this stretch...

The reservoir is always impressive to see once emptied ...

I read from a buddy that the emptied reservoir shortcut was still ok on Friday, so with the good visibility we had, we tested our luck despite the wet conditions

It was not for the fearful ones,  alot of surface water on the ice. It looks worse than it realy was because even if there was water, we ride on ice already leaning on the bottom of the reservoir on more than 90% of the way but the rivers(yes there are rivers in there) where worrisome. I would suggest every body to go around by the trail, I personally would not do it again this season!

Luc learned the risks associated by following us too closely ... he arrived on the shore a little wet!

We arrived for lunch at the Central in St-Michel around 12:15

After a good lunch and a great talk with Luc we headed south on #63. The strong sunshine combined with good winds at 10C made the trails tender and juicy !

Without surprises, we found some dirt spots near St-Michel village on the larges south-facing hills

But a little further it was still very snowy

Back in the Cabanon courtyard, we could see how much it had melted compared to the morning pic

We  switched into the Mastigouche Reserve on trail #345 to loop back. As I expected beautiful conditions, very snowy ,almost no traffic and not a single bump

Among the best conditions of the day. We also saw some fresh moose tracks on the trail. A nice spring ride for us at its best!

We stopped a few minutes at Koubec (which was closed)

And we came back on #350 trail which was also in very good condition

In sum a beautiful spring ride of 170miles for the three of us. With the reservoir loop groomed during the week, it was definitely a record in the area to ride recently groomed trails on a April 13th. A big thank you to the clubs involved!
It could close our season with 4830 miles on the venture dreameter...unless Kristine twist my arm for another last one somewhere !!!

Thanks CNC and Eastmark.  In Québec, before the club membership more or less morphed into a "trail pass" (it's still a club membership, by the way), we used to have a Family Membership.  However, so many people were gaming the system (it's amazing how many 45 year old "dependants" we had) that things changed and the card/sticker became associated with a unique machine.  I know it is expensive when you own multiple machines, but administrating it otherwise would be a nightmare.  It's worse for our nearby Ontario members who often put both Ontario and Québec stickers on their machines.  Dual province stickers were tried and failed, and any proposal that results in lower club revenues just won't fly.
By the way, I just checked out the distribution of snowmobile registration fees and, on a Quebec registration costing $94.60 annually, $40.00 is remitted to the FCMQ for distribution to member clubs.
As far as membership numbers go, our club's numbers have never been higher.  And provincially, it has risen by 5% per year for the past several years and now tops 100,000.  However, as far as members who actually realize that they're part of a volunteer organization goes (many pass buyers don't even realize that they are, by default, members of a club), generally the picture is not as rosy.  That being said, we're remarkably lucky in our club.  As you can see from the attached, we have a good mix of young and old on our Board, and we're pretty successful when it comes to conscripting non-board members to help out with routine trail maintenance and special projects.   Things are going great at the moment ... I hope it lasts!

You forgot one of the best uses....   If you show up to a hotel you want to stay in but it is fully booked, just drop Jake the snake in the lobby somewhere and I bet suddenly there will be some immediate room availability.  Just teach Jake to slither back to you when things settle down.  :)

Well, whatever type of slithering fellow this might be, I think you need to keep an open mind. With a little creativity, and perhaps a bit of nurturing, this guy could be an asset to your future snowmobiling trips. There are many uses that I'm sure you haven't even thought about. For instance, he could be used as a deterrent to the theft issues we sometimes face north of the border. Just lay him across the seat when you check into the hotel each night, that should keep the thieves at a distance. Also.....in the event of a missed turn in deep snow when you need a tug, he could double as a pull rope. And the obvious off season use of him would be to store him in the engine compartment to ward off any pesky mice trying to make your sled their home. Much the same as Mikerider adopted a monkey this winter, 'Copper' could be your new pet. It may take a while to adapt, but before long he'll be riding in your jacket pocket with you on your adventures to the North. Just don't forget to check him in at customs....

Instead of a few seasons of renting a sat phone one could own this tough little mutha:

And with the Roadpost Iridium monthly plans the unit doesn't just quit after a bucket of minutes like prepaid plans:

These guys may not deploy a chopper for every belly-ache, but they have ground logistics dialed in all across PQ, and now super-affordable with the seasonal bundle:

Thanks Triggerhappy.  Josie is a rescue from Tennessee and we were told maybe part lab.  We got her at 4 months old back in September and don't see any lab in her looks or traits. Someone suggested she looks like she has a lot of Feist breed in her. We had never heard of that breed, but after looking it up, she does appear to have a lot of Feist in her. She is fairly calm, but there is no tiring her out.  She needs constant exercise. And she is one extremely smart dog.  We are running out of new things to teach her. The wife hopes to maybe get her into agility training someday.

Just a quick update of George. He has settled into what may be his forever home after I found him hitchhiking on trail #5 this winter.  He keeps asking for EddieSkiDoo and SkiDoo420;  wants another weekend in Amqui with them.
He is getting along with everyone in the household  just fine. Still likes to monkey around and get himself in trouble occasionally. Says he likes the tropical weather of Maine better than the arctic cold of Quebec. He does miss happy hour at the Universel Hotel bar.  He is currently appealing his illegal immigrant status.
