As promised in my post 1 hour ago.  I came upon this scene at the 23-83 split down near Lac Vert.  Can anyone guess who just put their new 850, with less than 200 miles on it in the bushes?   I was told, by the owner of the sled,"gee I was only going about 10 mph, I don't understand how this happened".  Upon doing an accident  investigation of the accident scene, I saw where the right ski was on the edge of the trail for over 100 feet which IMO indicated that there was more to this story than I was being told.  A  sobriety test was conducted on scene and it was determined that the rider was sober.  So it was then determined that it was a case of the rider riding over his head.   Who do you think it was?

Today 182Ray and I took the new trail, local 1, off 383 that took us to the Saguenay River and over to St Charles.  The last mile is a goat path down to the River but very dooable .  The temp was -22F at 7 AM,  It was -15F at  12 noon.  Had coffee  at Relais du Lac and lunch at  Mont Vilian.  We then came back 367 to 83 to the pickle park trail.  There were a couple of guys out trolling in the park.
What a great cup of hot chocolate at Mont Vilain

Very cold here today.  High temp was 0F.  Left the Delta at 10AM.  Took 383, past ski hill in town, stopped at Spence's.  Charlie and Cliff were there as Cliff had one of the special secrews for the manual reverse backed out so he had no reverse.  About 11:30 we left Spence's and rode to Ski Bee Doo for lunch.  We took 383, the new trail to the St Charles crossing is open, groomed and marked.  Continued on 383 to 83/383 and then took 383 to 23 to SBD, which was packed  After lunch took 23 to 93 to 367 back to the Delta.  First day we did 100 miles.  Trails were good for a Sat afternoon.

Arrest of a snowmobile thief in Shawinigan
The Sûreté du Québec Multidisciplinary Support Team conducted Wednesday morning the arrest of Tommy Bruneau on the edge of a trail in the Lac-à-la-Tortue area of Shawinigan.
    Publicity
The police wanted to intercept a snowmobiler on a trail in the morning, but the latter escaped instead of stopping. He was chased by the latter and they would have lost sight of him.
After about one hour of trail tracking, the police located an abandoned snowmobile. It was reported stolen. They followed footsteps and asked the help of citizens to finally find the suspect who had hidden behind cedars. They arrested the 30-year-old man on the spot.
Well known to the police, Tommy Bruneau appeared yesterday afternoon at the Shawinigan courthouse. A series of charges were laid against him: dangerous driving, escaping and stowing vehicles. The man will also receive a dozen reports of offenses related to the law on off-road vehicles, in particular.
You can run but you can't hide.
Nice Job by the SQ. Shawinigan

This morning the wind has died down and the sky is beginning to clear.  It looks like a great day for riding.
We leave the Sag and take 367 to cross the two bridges.  We stay to the right on 134.  Today it has been broke and not too bad.  We are on our way to Mount Vilain so at 93 we turn left.  Ah, this was just groomed last night.  The sleds are warmed up and we are off.  Just before St Ambroise we turn right on 367 and it is still groomed.  This is Quebec grooming at its best.  All the way to Mount Vilain it is perfect.
A couple of sleds in the lot but its early.  We go in and have soup and coffee.  The workers here are as friendly as ever.  Looking out to the Canadian blue sky and the sleds parked in the lot, this is vacation!  The snow piles around the lot are already 5'-6' high.
We get back on our sleds and continue west on 367.  This part of 367 has had a little more traffic but is still wonderful.  Some light puffy snow has blown in over the groomed trail to make the ride so smooth.  I fall back a little from Sandi to stay out of the dust she's kicking up.  We jump on 328 and go to L'Ascension to top off the tanks.  We get back on 328 and run to Alma.  Many times this early in the season, this area can be thin but there is plenty of snow cover today.  We turn left on 93 starting to make our way back toward the hotel.  A little choppy around Alma.  After we cross over the 23 intersection, 93 smooths right out again.  This part of 93 is so much fun when it is smooth.  It has gently turns and a few rollers here and there.  Such a nice ride.
At Relais Montangarde, we stop and read the sign.  The relais is going to open Jan 6th.  Continue on to St Ambroise.  Its early so we turn left on 93 and run back up thru the potato field and return on 134, the way we came up this morning.  Back across the two bridges and back to the hotel.
Most of the trails were groomed last night.  Maybe so they don't have to groom tonight, New Years Eve.
What a great ride today.  The riding this year compared to other years has been great.  For those of you that follow us each December know that we have had years that we had to trailer to Valinouet to ride.  Not so this year.
See you tomorrow and we wish everyone a Happy New Year!

Wow, with that kind of excitement at Hotel, the trails are bound to be just as amazing.
Good to know that front desk is keeping a close eye on those Cameras pointed at the tent. Last year a tent collapse this year a fire. Hmmmm. I have used the tent. However i prefer not to. Usually i like to get one of those ground floor rooms with the sliding door and Lock them right there. This time of year the tents are usually empty, in season it's too crazy to deal with usually.

SnomoGary reacted to towing in St-Zénon/Rivière Mattawin by #345+360 trails photo ride-report 17december2016
Finally done, our first ride this season along with here our first ride report! We surely crossed Hden that posted earlier with pretty much the same path but in reverse: we did Cabanon/ Mattawin round trip

Saturday morning, around -18C very gray sky and snow. Starting from the Auberge Le Cabanon parking lot in St-Zénon

Dooright had trace the route for us earlier this last week and it was an easy one to pick this path knowing that the vast majority of the trail is on forest road base so it is easy to get beautiful trails condition even with a limited snow cover

There are a few miles from the start of the auberge out of these forest roads which still lack some snow but on this Saturday morning, freshly groomed with cold temperature it seemed almost perfect. Once back on the main road, it feels like in the middle of the season, almost no rocks and very beautiful

Here at the entrance of the Mastigouche wildlife reserve

What helps a lot is that the firsts snowfalls threy got were very wet, which once frozen left a dense and compact material on the ground rather than fluffy snow this is what explains the good trail condition the snow cover still thin at about a foot before the precipitation of the weekend.

In many spots this snow had stay in the trees creating magnificent scenery

    Here the Mattawin River Bridge

There are a couple miles more rough after the bridge

Until we get on the #360 in Zec Chapeau de paille territory.

    Very nice trail

The trail is groomed up to the junction with #345 north to Lake Repos outfitter. Then there are a 10 miles that were not groomed yet before joining the section maintained by Mattawin. Honestly, apart from a few trees that have fallen in the road and it did not really made a big difference and it is still a pretty fast section while staying alert.

Here on the section maintained by Matawin with the glaciers that begin to form

    Very nice and fast

This section along the river is always very nice to ride.

    The beauties of winter

It looks like this on many miles !!

    The #360 at its best

All this on a beautiful and fast trail

The last miles to join the Marineau auberge once out of the Zec are obviously less beautiful because the base is more rough and there are still some holes not completely clogged but it ride well even two-up. Here the classic view of the Mattawin River

We arrived at noon at the auberge Marineau with a little less than 80 miles on the dreammeter. We had a good lunch break and were nicely received as always.

The sun tend to point a bit after the lunch. Here a snowy section just after the bridge leaving from the Auberge

The view over the river with a little more light

We took the reverse path on the #360 to return

It looks like mid January in this area

We must pay attention to the branches that can hit our helmet. I got screwed and almost lost my Gopro when it got hit by one that I had missed and got ejected in the side trail snow.

It was snowing a little less in the afternoon

glaciers section seen the other way

Here in the ungroomed section, the worst pass with a lying tree in the trail that you must care of. There are a couple others that just partially obstruct the trail (I don’t even let the throttle) and all them can be seen very well in advance no problem

And although it was not yet groomed, we pushed some good speed spikes without problem

Since the #360 was riding so well, we decided to push up to the Taureau Dam before returning to the Cabanon. Minimum as beautiful if not better on this side

Dam crossing is no longer possible but it is still a nice place to take a break

On the return on the #345 not far after the Mattawin bridge we crossed the dozer

And we continued at a good pace towards the south. We took a small break at the entrance of the  Mastigouche reserve

We finally got back at the trailer a little before 4:30 pm with 178miles on the dreameter, not bad for a first ride.

In summary already very good for a season start, very few rocks and the snow that is actually falling in quantity will help to improve the conditions and widen the trail network. Temperatures are winter one and the lakes and rivers are actually at freezing, we can safely say that the snowmobile season is already begin and we will be able to enjoy it for the Christmas holidays!

You may want to take a look here to follow how the trails opening will go on, many details here:
